These top schools receive significant gifts and funding from private industries and their financial wealth is growing larger. At the same time, public universities receive fewer supports as government is reducing funding and private donors begin to withdraw their financial supports. The report warned that this gap will pose a major challenge for the education system as many public universities will not have the resources to invest in facilities, faculty hiring, and update their curriculum to stay competitive in this fast changing market.

The report stated that some private universities had assets in cash and investments worth in billion dollars where most public universities was only in million. These assets of the top schools have increased over 50 percent in the past five years as more donors were giving to private schools. Among the top are Harvard University ($42.8 billion) Stanford University ($31.6 billion), Yale University ($25.4 billion), and Princeton University ($21.3 billion), Massachusetts Institute of Technology ($15.2 billion). With more money, these schools can hire top faculty, invest in modern facilities, and improve their trainings to meet the market needs and attract the best students. While at the same time many public universities have to cut expenses, reducing the numbers of faculty, and delay update in training materials. Some are laying off employees and few even shut down. A Wall Street analyst predicts: “This is the beginning of a new trend in education where performance is becoming more important to private industries that need skilled graduates and they invest in where they think is best for them. Soon public universities will suffer more because the funding that they receive from government is not enough to operate sufficiently. Soon they will not be able to compete with private universities and their training quality will decrease when their best faculties will move to private schools. Today parents rather send their children to private universities and willing to pay higher price because they have better trainings, their programs are up to date and in alignment with what the job market needs than public universities that are still clinging to the old way of trainings and have large number of unemployed graduates.”

Another analyst explained: “Public education systems have not improved for many years despite all the helps from governments. These schools do not see the urgency to change as they continue what they have been doing for many years. Some teachers do not think they need to change because they do not have to compete with anything. Their jobs are secured because universities do not lay-off teachers, and the longer they teach, the more secured is their position. Universities do not bankrupt because they are public institutions with government’s support. Schools do not have to worry about having customers because there are plenty of students who want to go to school. Teachers do not worry about the materials that they teach because they dictate what students must learn. On the contrary, company must care about the products because nobody would buy bad products. Public schools do not worry about bad products as they have tendency to pass students, even ones who do not deserve to pass, to keep everybody happy. After all, they all graduate, get degree and unemployed graduates often blame themselves, not the school. That is why public schools cannot change because there is no reason to. However private universities operate like a business, they understand that tuition fees are only a small part of their business but by meeting industry needs, they can get industries to donate more money and more people to invest in their schools which are much more. That is why private universities spend more on update their training programs to meet the need of the market and parents are willing to pay for their training because it helps their children to get good jobs.”

Among the oldest education system in the world is Chinese education systems with thousands of public universities and several millions of students. But recently it is being challenged by the new and emerging system of private universities aiming at children of the middle class. Traditionally, education is considered the most important factor in Chinese culture and it would be hard to find another country that has spent as much in education as China in the past 10 years but the result is disappointed with millions of unemployed college graduates each year. A Chinese business manager explains: “We are living in the information age but these schools are still teaching theories of the 1960s using textbooks written twenty or thirty years ago and teach by professors who graduated in the 1970s, before the personal computer were invented. That is why private universities are flourished with better training programs, better teachers, better facilities where they are giving our next generation the kind of training similar to the famous foreign universities provides. The number of young people studying in private universities has increased more than ten times than previous five years. Today the rich people send their children to the U.S. and UK for better education but the middle class send their children to private universities as we do not trust public universities anymore.”

While the Chinese government continues to support public universities but private universities are now a part of a billion dollar industry. Many of these schools are publicly-listed companies in China stock market with significant investment from the public. An analyst explained: “The move towards private education in China not only reflects the aspirations of China’s growing middle class who demand a better education for their children but also a growing dissatisfaction with China’s public education.” A business manager explains: “Educators in other parts of the world are becoming increasingly critical of the Chinese public education system. It has an enormous emphasis on rote learning, classes can spend a lot of time repeating the same things again and again, and it often does not lead to anything but a paper degree. Although these degrees from public universities are still good for graduates who want to work for the governments but today most private industries and foreign companies do not hire these graduates anymore because most have degree but not skills. The Chinese middle class are now willing to spend their saving to send their children to private universities in China, especially English-speaking schools that have training programs similar to famous universities in the U.S. or UK such as Harvard, Oxford etc. and these private universities are now having good reputation in China with large numbers of applicants.”

An investing analyst explained: “Education is big business in China. Even with some universities charging as much as RMB16,000 to RMB 25,000 a year for tuition, in a country where the average wage is only RMB13,000 a year, these private universities are still growing strong and their stocks have shot up higher than ever. For example one of the leading private universities is begin to list their stock on the New York Stock Exchange and has a market capitalization of over $4.4 billion. That is why investment in private schools is now considered better than land, oil and natural resources. With oil prices stumble, land prices stumbles in the past year but education is still considered stable as it can withstand the test of time. No matter what, people still need education. In China, it is still the best investment.”

Chinese traditionally have a deep respect for education but increasingly the dissatisfaction with public education has opened new opportunity to private universities and this trend is gaining momentum. A Chinese journalist wrote: “If all the top universities in the world are all private then why not here? Why do we need to keep an old tradition that does not work anymore? If private universities can fill in the role that the society needs then we should embrace this change and invest in private schools.”

Today there are changes in the job markets produced by globalization and technology. Many jobs are disappearing in just a very short time due to automation or being replaced by robots or machines. All over the world college degrees are losing value as the trend is about knowledge and skills, not a piece of paper that guarantee nothing. However in some countries, government, parents, and students are still placing a value on the education that issues degree instead of an education that equips the graduate with skills to find employment in this changing market. Unless this view is changing, the traditional education system will not feel the urgency to change.

Theo một báo cáo, các đại học tư ở Mĩ đang trở nên giầu hơn và giữ quãng hai phần ba toàn thể sự giầu …

[29

post-4761","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-loi-khuyen-cho-giao-vien
["GET
