We are educating students on general knowledge so they can function well in the society, it is not our goal to find them job.\u201d With many unemployed college graduates all over the world, parents begin to demand changes in the education systems. A mother said: \u201cIn the past, a college degree means good job and good future. Today it does not means anything because college\u2019s education has nothing to do with what the market needs. Either college must focus the teaching on fields that are in high demand; else we will have to find new ways to educate our children.\u201d A Wall Street Analyst wrote: \u201cEducation is a major investment for parents and their children and university leaders must do more than what they have been doing. They must understand the economics of supply and demand and quickly move from theory focus to practical focus, from rhetoric to performance.\u201d<\/p>\n
As a result of fast changing technology, traditional college education is not effective enough to keep up with the growing needs of companies who hire college graduates. A father complained: \u201cStudents are taught to study hard, get good grades, pass exams, get degree but no one mention about skills. The reason college graduates cannot find jobs because they do not have skills that are in high demand. For many years, students are tested on their memorization, on how much can they remember but nothing about developing skills. All they have is knowledge that cannot be applied to anything practical in the real world.\u201d<\/p>\n
Few years ago, a college survey found that over 80% of college graduates believe that they will be trained by hiring companies on what skills they need to do their job. However, most companies are not willing to provide additional training as they believe college graduates already have skills and ready to work. Different expectations led to the hiring then firing of thousand college graduates within few months of their graduation in 2011 and 2012. After that incident, many companies set up stricter interview process to qualify potential employees where they have to demonstrate their skills before being hired. A senior manager explained: \u201cWe do not trust college degree anymore. We have to make sure people that we hire have the skills that we need.\u201d<\/p>\n
The fact is the job market moves too fast for the education system to keep up. For example, as soon as text books are published, some information is obsoleted because it takes several years to write textbook but technology changes much faster. As soon as teachers learn something new, before they even teach it, newer things are created. If you look at the skills required for high paying jobs today, they often are something new that only few universities know and teach. That explain why leaders of top universities are different from others. They all have vision as they understand the challenge that they are facing in this fast changing world. They all have plans to guide their faculty to assimilate new knowledge into their curriculum. These universities always update their training programs with new courses, new initiatives, and new researches. They understand that teachers training to keep up with technology changes are the keys to their success. These top universities put student learning at the center of the teaching process by supporting their faculty to develop new instructional activities that promote student learning and performance.<\/p>\n
When I was teaching in Asia, professors often asked: \u201cHow does the U.S. ranked their universities? Why universities such as Princeton, Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Yale and Carnegie Mellon always occupy the top positions? I explained: \u201cUniversity rankings are based on complex methodologies with many factors such as admission rates, graduation rates, faculty resources, financial resources etc. But there are key factors such as the ratio of employed graduates working in the field related to their education; the number of published research that are frequently cited by others; and the frequency of improvement in their curriculum. For example, a school has most of its computer graduates working in the software industry are ranked high on the employment ratio. A school that published a lot of research papers per year and many of them are cited by other researchers is ranked high on research factor. A school that updates its course materials frequently or changes it every few years is ranked high on performance factor; a school that has program to support faculty trainings to update their knowledge and skills is ranked high on faculty training factor; and a school that collects data on both students and faculty performance is ranked high on metrics factors etc.<\/p>\n
Today education is considered a major investment and like any investment, the ranking of schools has become an important factor in increasing prestige, applicants, more donations from companies and greater revenue potential. Among the top 10 universities in the U.S. all are private as they can quickly adjust and adopt changes faster than public universities.<\/p>\n
