Sometimes teachers are so concerned with making sure that they cover all of these materials and forget whether students are learning them or not. Experienced teachers know how to monitor students\u2019 learning and if needed, skip some materials in the curriculum and focus on students\u2019 learning, but new teachers are reluctant to skip anything for fear of not achieve the learning goals of the class.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty five years ago, when first teaching I was worried about not complete the course materials so I set up a rigid plan that each day, I must cover a numbers of thing within the course curriculum. I still remember that after few weeks, most students were lost as I have taught too much, too fast and they could not catch up. The class was frustrated, students were angry and I was worried. How could I maintain control of the class and accomplish the goals that the school has set? One day a student asked: \u201cCould you please go over chapter 2 materials as we do not quite understand that part.\u201d I was surprised: \u201cWhat do you mean we have to go over chapter 2, we are currently halfway in chapter 6?\u201d The student said: \u201cBut we do not understand what you are teaching, we have no idea what you are talking about.\u201d I tried to maintain my authority: \u201cDid you read chapter 2, 3, 4 and 5? How could you not understand anything?\u201d The student complained: \u201cYou go too fast, we have not even understood the basics then you jump into another concept and another. What kind of teaching is it?\u201d That word hit me hard as I asked myself: \u201cWhat kind of teacher am I? So I stopped lecture and explained: \u201cWe only have 10 weeks but 22 chapters in the textbook. If we do not finish these chapters then what have we learned?\u201d The student asked: \u201cWhy do we have to follow the textbook? Why not really learn something well first? Why do we need to finish 22 chapters but do not learn anything? At that time, I thought: \u201cThey are right, as teachers we need to listen to the students more rather than just follow the curriculum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since then I learned to monitor students\u2019 learning and focus more on what they have learned to make sure that they are learning something. I learned that having students\u2019 understanding the materials is better than complete the course materials. I learned that in order to learn, students need some understanding about the subject. They must know that there is something they need to know before they can learn it. The problem is many students not only do not know anything about the subject but do not even recognize how much they have to learn. Therefore, as teacher, the priority is to let them know that there is a lot of information that are important and they will need them. Of course, after telling them that there is a lot to learn, I must explain to them WHY they should learn these things because most students are not interested in what we are teaching. They are taking our class because it is required for graduation and for them to get a degree. It is up to us, to help them understand WHY the information we are teaching is meaningful to them, else they are not learn as much as they could.<\/p>\n<p>As teacher, I learned that students will learn something if they are interest in the subject. The common thing teachers do to make them study is grades. Having good grades is important to some students, especially to show their parents, friends, and others. But I learned that there is another way of motivate besides grades. By clearly explain HOW and WHY they will use the knowledge in their job as well as their lives. Most students in my Project Management course may not interest in the estimation techniques or the metrics but they would pay attention when I explain that most project managers failed in project estimates and metrics and by knowing these things, they can outperform others and advance in their career quickly. Most companies often judge project managers on how well they estimate and how well they using metrics to manage projects. I learn that students learn more efficiently and effectively if they understand the relevance of a topic to anything else in their lives.<\/p>\n<p>In most academic textbooks and college materials, there are so many theories. Many are useful but some are not. But our teaching does not have to be about theories. As teachers, we should connect what we are teaching to the &#8220;real world&#8221; outside the classrooms. I often bring news articles on current events to the class and ask students to discuss. I want to show them HOW the work they are learning in class will prepare them for what they will be doing in their future. Last week, I brought an article about the new \u201cApple Watch\u201d to the class and spend most of class discussion on this technology. At the end students told me: \u201cNow we understand WHY we need to learn about sensors and wireless communication.\u201d Of course, I did not mention anything about sensors and wireless because they are the next topics that they will learn. Students who understand the relevance of what they are learning will likely to become engaged with it. Engagement is what they need to achieve the technical mastery. It means students are totally focusing themselves in the subject matter. They are listening carefully in class, participating in discussions, and reading the materials prior to coming to class. It also means they are thinking about the concepts and the materials and ready to learn more. But most of all, it also means they have gone beyond just listening and thinking to actually ready to apply it into something.<\/p>\n<p>I learned that students do not learn something easily; they often get distracted and forget what they heard. As teachers, we need to reinforce their learning by repeat the concepts over and over again. I often repeat the concepts at least three times to make sure students understand and remember them. It also includes weekly tests to determine how well they really understand the concepts. However, to increase students\u2019 learning, it is important to let student see some evidences apart from anything their textbooks say. I often bringing in articles, news, and invited guest speakers to enforce the concept. Students are always learning more and understand more with these extra curriculum. Sometime by looking at the students, I can guess that they are losing interest in learning the subject. Last week, I heard students talked to others: &#8220;Why do we have to learn this? We are software engineers, not mathematicians.&#8221; Last Monday, I asked a former student who are working at Google to come in and lecture in my class. As he explained to them how much mathematics he had to implement in the Search Engine at Google, I could see the class attitudes were starting to change. After that no one complain about the chapter on statistics in my course anymore.<\/p>\n<p>As teachers, we have to build a learning environment in which students feel challenged and motivated to learn. Our ultimate quest is not to figure out how to teach best but how to create a place where students can and will learn. That is our challenge in this fast changing world. As teachers, we will go through a lot of error, failures and successes but for me is what it means to be a teacher. During my years of teaching, I have tried to make myself more aware of the fact that a curriculum is just a guide, a roadmap for us to lead our students in their education journey. A teacher has to be willing to let a class develop naturally in the learning aspect. Every class is different, and the teacher has to listen to students\u2019 reaction to know when a learning opportunity has come and act accordingly.
