Seeking career information<\/p>\n

Today many college students are having difficulty in planning their career. Some told me that there is conflict between what their parents\u2019 suggest and what are needed in the market place. A student said: \u201cMy parents only know what happened when they were my age so they insist on few career choices such as Medical, Dental, and Pharmaceutical but today there are more choices that they do not know.\u201d Another student admitted: \u201cMy family insists that I go to college and get a degree but let me choose anything I like but I do not know what I like yet.\u201d\u00a0 Another added: \u201cEverybody says that you must follow your dream and your passion in college, my brother did that and followed his love for architecture then could not find any work. Currently he works as an advertising sale person to an online newspaper with minimum wage. I do not want to be like him.\u201d<\/p>\n

With the job market changes quickly, many college students do not know what fields of study to choose that can help them to get good job when graduate. I believe the best way is to ask people who are working in the industry to get the right information that can help them to make decision on which one would be good for them, and what they need to succeed.<\/p>\n

I often recommend that first year students spend some time with people who are working in certain industries who can provides them with information they need to plan their career accordingly. This is\u00a0not about looking for work, but an effective way of getting to know more people who may help them. Unfortunately, most students often select fields of study based on family\u2019s suggestions, influences of friends, or even notions about certain careers they saw on TV or movies. That is why many miss out on good opportunity as they do not know in details about certain career fields well enough to make the right decision. By talking to people who are working on a field that they are planning to select, they will have the most up-to-date information as well as certain skills that they must develop to get the job. They can also gain invaluable experience and visibility into what the future will be.<\/p>\n

The first thing college students could do is to narrow their choices to few areas then read all they can about these choices before asking people who work there. They need to decide what information they would like to obtain about the industry. They must prepare a list of questions that they would like to have answered. It is possible to inquire into a company and asking to meet certain people. Most people would like to help students with career information. As a first year student, you can ask a lot of questions. When people know that you are not looking for job but only seeking information they would be happy to help. The more you know about the work, the better you will be able to formulate the right questions pertaining to certain skills that you must develop. The more knowledge you have, the more confident you will feel about your ability to select the right career effectively.<\/p>\n

Sometimes the people are so impressed with you they may offer an\u00a0internship<\/a>or summer job. It happened often with my students on many occasions. A manager later told me: \u201cI have worked in this position for many years but no one seems to interest about it until your students come. They ask a lot of questions which make me feel good about what I have achieved. I am proud about my career and when several young men ask me about my achievement, it make me feel good.\u201d Many students have done nothing but only ask questions and yet they have been offered\u00a0employment<\/a>\u00a0when they graduate and suddenly their college education has significant meaning. When students approach a manager with the attitude that they are seeking\u00a0career advice<\/a>\u00a0it means they are serious about learning and it always impress people. By askingquestions that are appropriate for your learning, you express your motivation to learn and interest in a career rather than just a job. By asking questions, you obtain a lot of information about your career fields and the skills needed to do that job effectively. You gain a perspective of work that allowing you to see not only what skills are required for the job but how you might fit into that work setting. Thus, you have greater flexibility in planning your studying in school. You also build a lot of contacts with people who are in positions to hire you when you graduate. You become aware of the needs of the companies and what happens on the job beyond the information provided through your course work or other research. This opportunity will expose you to a variety of jobs and personalities of companies making the job search later much easier.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
