A father wrote to me: \u201cMy daughter read your blog and wants to study Software Engineering. We prefer her to study Business Administration as we do not think engineer is a good career for women. She does not agree and cites evidences in your blog so we want to ask you whether Software Engineer is a good career, especially for young woman or not? Please advise.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: We are in the Information Age where many things are impacted by technology, especially software. There are many excellent career choices to choose but Software Engineer is probably one of the best. I do believe it is a good career for women; all over the world, there are many successful women who work in software; in my program at CMU more than half students are women.<\/p>\n
If you look into salaries paid out to people with a software degree versus salaries of those with other degrees you will see that there is a significant difference. In comparison to other workers within any company, a software graduate is usually get better position and better paid. The Software Engineering program provides a wider field for graduates to build their career. They can work as Software Developer, Software Quality Specialist, Software Architect, Software Project Manager and even Chief Information Officer in Software Company. Or they can work as Business analyst, Information System Manager, Technology officer, and Security officer in a Business sectors such as Finance or Bank. With a degree in Software Engineer, your daughter is qualified to pursue a career in multiple areas as she chooses because almost every business sector as well as the public sector needs software people.<\/p>\n
There is a shortage of software skilled workers all over the world. After completing Software Engineering degree, graduates can go to work anywhere in the world because this degree is one that is highly recognizable throughout the world. There are excellent opportunities for her to interact with other professionals and business managers to expand her career. Some software graduates become entrepreneurs and start their own company. By enrolling in a Software Engineering program, your daughter can acquire the technological knowledge and practices needed to develop and operate her own company while contributing to the economic development of your country.<\/p>\n
With so many career choices, finding the right Software Engineering program to enroll in can be difficult. But if you and your daughter have agreed that this is a good field of study then my recommendation is to select a Software Engineering program that is affiliated with a well-known school that has international recognition to provide her with the requisite knowledge, skills and ethics to do well in her future career. Personally I do believe Software Engineering is the perfect choice for your daughter.<\/p>\n
