A conversation in Beijing<\/p>\n
Last summer when I taught the course \u201cStartups and Innovations\u201d in China, a professor lamented: \u201cOur country graduates more than a million engineering a year. In the past ten years, our government had invested several billions of dollars in universities. We have the most modern research laboratories that are similar to the best laboratories in the world. But despite of these efforts, we have not produced any significant innovation that can lift our economy up. We have not produced someone like Bill Gates or Steve Jobs. We do not know why innovation is not happening?<\/p>\n
I explained: \u201cAlthough your governments have invested a lot of money into the education system, build modern laboratories but these cannot produce innovation. Innovation comes from people who are dedicating themselves to create new things. But this is impossible in a country where people copy things, make fake things, and steal other peoples\u2019 works. Basically these things prevent people to innovate. Why create something innovate when someone can duplicate your works? Why spend your life to invent something but others can steal it? You can see these evidences everywhere, from fake Rolex watches, Gucci bags, to smartphones, and automobiles.\u201d<\/p>\n
My friend was not happy but admitted: \u201cYes, it is true that many people copy and stole technologies from others but because they cannot innovate\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
I told him: \u201cBut it is not an excuse. Historically, Chinese are innovative, they invent a lot of things in the past but in the past few decades they changed. Instead of created things, they copied things, made fake things and these unethical were acceptable by the society. It does not means they cannot innovate because I taught Chinese students at CMU, many have created wonderful innovations. Some became founders of companies in Silicon Valley. They did well because they benefited from an education system that promotes critical thinking and problem solving. To encourage start-ups and innovations, you must begin with the education system. You cannot pump money into an archaic system and hope that it will change. You cannot buy modern equipments to laboratories and be proud that they are the best. Money and machinery do not foster innovations, but people do. Instead spending money on material things, you should invest in people. An archaic education system cannot produce creative people if the training is still based on memorization and passing exams.\u201d<\/p>\n
He hesitated then agreed: \u201cYou may be right, so what can we do better?\u201d<\/p>\n
I explained: \u201cIn my opinion, to encourage innovations, you must start with the training of teachers. Instead of invest money in new laboratories; you should invest in teachers by raising their salary so they can dedicate to improve classroom\u2019s teaching. Improvement must start with the people who have the most important role in education: teachers. You cannot get the best people to work as teachers if the salary is low. Without the best teachers to guide students, modern laboratories and best equipments are nothing and innovation will never happen. To improve education system, some teaching methods must also change to adjust to younger generation of students who grow up with technology. The memorization of facts to pass exams is things of the past and must be replaced by active learning where students are taught about competencies, critical thinking and problem solving. Without these skills, it would be difficult to promote innovations to improve the economy.\u201d<\/p>\n
He seemed to like it: \u201cThat is reasonable. What else could you suggest?\u201d<\/p>\n
I explained: \u201cToday most entrepreneurship classes are taught in business administration programs. In my opinion to foster innovations, entrepreneurship programs should be taught in technical programs. This program could teach basic business concepts to engineering and science students where invited guest lecturers are real entrepreneurs. Future entrepreneurs should learn from successful entrepreneurs. They should also learn about new technologies and emerging trends so they know what the future could be. Perhaps the most effective way to encourage technical students to start their own company is to offer specific degree programs focused on innovation and entrepreneurship taught by successful entrepreneurs because traditional academic programs may not be effective.\u201d<\/p>\n
I continued: \u201cAnother problem that needs to be solved is to prevent the copying and stealing of other peoples\u2019 works. That means among technology and business courses, the program should also have a course in ethics. If entrepreneurs are afraid of having their innovations stolen by others then they may start their innovative company elsewhere where they can be protected. That is why many of your best people immigrated to the U.S. and built their company in Silicon Valley. Even with million engineers and scientists graduate each year but without adequate jobs to support them, many have to work in jobs that do not even require a college education and you are wasting human talents. To encourage economic growth and solve unemployment, your country needs to encourage young people to become entrepreneurs and start their own company. That means your education system must change and it should begin with the investment in teachers and the teaching method.\u201d<\/p>\n
