A student wrote to me: \u201cI want to be an entrepreneur and start my own company. I have developed several mobile apps but today people do not pay for mobile apps anymore. How do I make money as an entrepreneur? Please help.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: Today most mobile apps do not charge money but make money based on advertising revenue. You do not need to sell your apps to users but still make money on advertising. Of course, making money from advertising company is not easy. If your apps are not popular, advertisers are not willing to pay you. (Note: Both Facebook and Google started as a product company but they quickly change and now making money based on advertising.)<\/p>\n
To succeed in mobile apps business, you need to attract more users. It means your apps must be special and interesting to keep people using them all the time. (I assume that you are developing mobile game apps?) If users do not use them often, you so not have enough users to expand up to the size you need to get advertising money. When you reach a certain number of users such as hundred thousand or million users than you will get the attention of advertising companies; and they will pay to put their advertises in your products.<\/p>\n
You need to count the number of users on a daily basis as well as collect information about your users. The more you know about your users, the better you can set your ad prices. Advertisers always want to know what type of users they can market to and when you have the right users, they will pay top prices. For example, if users are young students, clothing companies will pay to advertise their products as more students would be interested in clothing and fashion. If users are elderly people, pharmaceutical companies will pay to advertise their drugs as these people would often buy drugs etc. Facebook and Twitter do this very well by allowing advertisers to see users\u2019 data that helps them market to the exact customers they want. Therefore your User Interface (UI) should collect data about users so advertisers can create targeted campaigns directly to them in your UI.<\/p>\n
As the founder of a startup, you are responsible for the look and feel of your products. Do not let advertisers dictate how their ads appear on your product. You need to explain to them how you like your apps would look like and how long the advertises can be displayed as they are being integrated into your product. Since users do not pay to use your products, they understand that they must see some advertises but most hate disruptive banner ads so you must be careful. You need to think carefully about how you incorporate ads in your products to make sure that they do not interfere with the user\u2019s experience, else they do not use it again.<\/p>\n
By understanding the role advertising involves in your business you can make money, especially if your mobile apps are popular. When you reach millions of users, you can do very well with advertises money. Google, Facebook, Twitter etc. are making money that way and their revenues are in the million dollars per day.<\/p>\n
