The automation trend<\/p>\n
Although robots have been used in industry for many years, recent advances in technology have reduced their costs and increased their capabilities so the use of robots has exploded. Today advance in robotics have helped manufactures to cut costs, raise productivity, reducing labor workers and increasing profits. Robots also make labor costs less important when they make decisions on where to locate factories and reduce outsourcing to a minimum. Today about 55% tasks in manufacturing industry from cars, trucks to computers and electronics have been performed by robots but it can move up to 85% within the next few years and it will completely change the entire industry to be considered \u201cfully automated\u201d. An executive explained: \u201cBy having less labor workers we can double our profits, automation is the best investments.\u201d<\/p>\n
In the past, robots and automated machines are isolated systems with limited memory. But with cloud computing, everything changes. Today there is a new approach where robots and automation systems can exchange data and perform works via networks. These machines do not work in isolation anymore but link to the Internet, so its programs can be updated and data can be collected for further analysis. Robotics technology is now being integrated with cloud computing, machine learning, big data analytics to support faster and better automation works. There are advantages to robots and automation systems using the Cloud: It is easy to update computer programs, download images, maps, and descriptive data about certain objects in real time. By connecting robots to the cloud, developers can access to all data for analysis and motion planning to make sure the robots is performing better and more accurate. Robots can share information with others automated systems so the entire system will work perfectly for better results. Their works can be monitored by human in control room located far away for analyzing, classification, and error fixing. For example, persons in California can monitor and control robots in factory in China or Thailand, etc.<\/p>\n
By connect to a network, self-driving cars, and autonomous flying drones can check maps, pictures images, and other data before and during their operation. Autonomous cars can check weather, maps, traffic to determine certain location to make decision on which is the best way to travel. Data from each car is also shared via the network for optimization. When a traffic jam is detected, it will alert other self-driving cars to avoid that place. According to several studies, self-driving cars will be available in the next few years (Self-driving Tesla car is available in 2016 according to Tesla Company.) Google already invested in self-driving cars technology and license it to cars companies and today Google employees are driving these cars to work. Rumor is Apple will also build its own Apple self-driving cars soon.<\/p>\n
Today businesses consider data as the main asset; they collect all data spanning the business operations by automation devices already set up in company. The Internet of Things (IoT) allow company to extend business processes to leverage existing investments, creating new efficiencies and new revenue sources, and enabling better innovation. For example, Elevator companies are now installing sensors in their elevators. By connecting elevators to the cloud, company can collect data from its sensors for business intelligence to improve operations and maintenance. Australian mining company uses self-driving trucks and drills that need no human operators at their mines. Automated trains will soon carry the ore to a port 300 miles away with only few people monitor them from the computer control room hundred miles away. By automate their system; the company could cut more than half the number of workers. With Artificial Intelligence technology, robots can review legal documents in court faster than lawyers; write news reports faster than journalists; translate languages faster than translators; generate online advertising for online websites faster than marketing people; and exchange bank transactions faster than bank tellers etc. All the jobs used to be done by human are now being done by robots and this trend is accelerating in many countries.<\/p>\n
According to a news report, robots and automation machines will be used in South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand in the next few years because there are many industries there that can be automated to reduce the increasing higher labor costs. Another destination is China but its government is still reluctant to adopt robots for fear of putting several millions of labor workers out of work. An analyst said: \u201cSooner or later, China will have to adopt robotic technology to reduce costs else they cannot compete with lower cost products from others. With efficient automation and robots, developed countries such as the U.S., UK, and Germany do not need to outsource manufacturing works anymore, they will keep most works within their own country and that could be devastated to countries that are depending on low labor costs.\u201d Another analyst wrote: \u201cwith advanced technology, a third of all jobs will be lost to automation within a decade. And by 2060 half of the current jobs will be performed by machine technology.\u201d<\/p>\n
Today automation has created a lot of fears about machines that can replace people. As new robots are so efficient and lower costs, every company is working on plan to automate their systems to stay competitive. In this technology driven world, unskilled labor works are vulnerable as many of them will not be able to keep their jobs, but technology also create many new jobs, better jobs, and higher paying jobs for people with higher education, especially in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields. The question is does the country have enough of these skilled workers?<\/p>\n
