The creation of jobs<\/p>\n
According to U.S government\u2019s economic report, the industry has created additional 257,000 new jobs last month and the number of jobs created in the past few years was exceeding all forecasts. Wall Street traders expressed their optimistic: \u201cWe have been doing better than ever before as the stock market keeps moving ups with no sign of slowing.\u201d Another statistics indicated that last year, over million new jobs were created and unemployment had moving down to the lowest point in the past ten years. Several economists proudly announced that their plan to recover from the financial crisis has succeeded. The U.S. Chief economist declared: \u201cOur economy is \u201con fire\u201d with many jobs created. More people are working today than few years ago. People are buying, spending and driving our manufactures to increase production. As oil prices keep falling, more people are buying cars and push US economy confidence to its highest level in a decade.\u201d<\/p>\n
If you look closely at the data, the industry that creates more jobs was not the manufactures, the retails, or the fast foods but technology industries. Today Information Technology industry is growing faster than any industry with thousands of new startups emerges each year. Most economists praise big companies create jobs for the economy but ignore small companies because they only look at the number of job created. For example, General Motor employs 500,000 workers in their factories so 1% increase means 5000 new jobs. Apple employs 40,000 engineers so 1% increase only means 400 new jobs. These economists fail to look at the impact of these technology jobs. An engineer at Apple makes over $120,000 a year when a factory worker at General Motor makes less than $60,000. If you look further, Apple products have supported about 5 million additional jobs, from selling iPhones, iPads in retail stores to independent developers who create mobile apps and sell them on iTunes. According to recent research, one job in high tech industry helps created eight supporting jobs in the U.S. In developing countries, one high tech job can support twelve other jobs. Economists also do not look at startups as these small companies only employ about ten to two hundred people and they are not stable enough to justify a study so they fail to recognize that startups are the main driver of economic recovery.<\/p>\n
Recent data clearly shows that the current U.S. job growth occurs mostly through startups. The study of the Business Dynamics Statistics tracks the annual number of new businesses that are younger than one year old reveals that in past years, these startups added an average of 1million new jobs per year and 85% of these jobs are higher paying jobs. Even in during the financial crisis, job creation at startups remains stable and cities that have more startups do not have problems with crimes. At the same time, cities that rely on large manufacturing factories are doomed when unemployment increase with more violent crimes and drug problems. When startups succeed and grow into large companies, their contribution to the economy is significant. For example last week Apple reported the most profitable quarter of any company in the U.S history. For the Oct to Dec of 2014, Apple posted a net profit of $18 billion. Number like this is unheard of for even the largest or most successful companies in the world. If you combine the revenue of Microsoft, Amazon and Google over the same period, it is still much less than Apple. More than that, Apple is growing far more quickly as it sales grew 30% per year in the past ten years when Microsoft only grew 8% and Google grew 15%. A Wall Street analyst wrote: \u201cTechnology company like Apple seems to defying the business laws of what is possible. In the history of the world, there is never a company that can grow that fast with so much momentum and larger profits. Today Apple is the most profitable company in the world; the most successful company in the world but more than that, Apple has several thousand engineers, many of them have stocks that worth several million dollars. There are more millionaires at Apple than any company in the world. If you look at all the wealth in the world today, most of them are in technology companies.\u201d<\/p>\n
The fact is the whole world is being impacted by technology and countries are moving quickly to adopt technology as the driver of their economy. But this rapid technological change also creates problems for developing countries that could not catch up. Especially countries who are trying to transition from agricultural focus into industrial focus then suddenly finding that their labor skills are becoming obsolete. Labor workers who work in the factories are being replaced by robots and automation. It is predicted by 2020, 85% of manufacturing works will be fully automated and most labor workers will be unemployed. Of course the solution is having better education and trainings that allow them to acquire high demand skills. But changing a traditional education system that lasts for hundreds or thousands of years is difficult. There are not enough teachers to provide students with high demand skills. There is not enough information about jobs marketplace for students to choose what to study. There is resistance among people who make a living in current education system as change could means they may not be able to maintain their positions.<\/p>\n
Today the U.S enjoys more job creation that technology startups create than any country in the world because of its strong focus on technology education. If you look at Europe, you can see bad economic news happen in Greece, Spain, and Italy with very high unemployment. The sad fact is these governments continue to issue more tax incentives and benefits to big manufacturing companies who operate large factories with the hope that they will create jobs. Their economists continue to praise big companies as the driver of job creation without accepting the fact that this theory is no longer valid.<\/p>\n
