“Easy teachers, strict teachers”<\/p>\n
A teacher complained: \u201cToday students are not the same as several years ago. Many are lazy; do not pay attention to lecture; often get distracted by emails and text messages in class and even rude when I warn them. I am frustrated and even consider quitting this job\u2026.\u201d I explained to her: \u201cAs teachers, our job is to educate them and we should do whatever necessary to make them learn, including being strict with them. They may not like it now but in the future, they will appreciate what we do.\u201d Then I shared with her one of the case that happened in my course.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have taught \u201cIntroduction to Computer Systems\u201d for many years. This is a popular course that has students from technical fields as well as students from other fields such as Business, Arts and Music. Although many like the course and tell me that it helps them to understand more about computer technologies and its impact to the world, but there are some who find the course not to their liking. When students do not interest in learning, they often skip classes, read emails or text their friends rather than pay attention to the lecture. Most teachers ignore that and continue to lecture like nothing happen. Some believe that if students do not want to learn, that is their problem as they will get bad grade or even fail the course.<\/p>\n
I do not agree with that view so in every class that I teach, I am very strict with students to make sure that they learn. On the first day of class, I set my expectations: students must attend class regularly, read assigned materials before coming to class, participate in class discussion, stay attentive, do not talk or sleep in class, no open laptop, use smartphone or doing anything that may distract others from learning. I believe classroom is where learning to take place. I set strict rules such as after few warnings, I will lower their grade or even ask them to leave the course. I make clear that in my class everyone should learn together so they understands, appreciates, and respects each other as they share the responsibility for making the class a positive place to learn. I consider classroom is a \u201cmicrocosm\u201d of the society where it is the place where we shape young minds so they will practice what they learn. The classroom situation we create is the test of what we believe in as it describes our vision for how young citizens will build our society in the future.<\/p>\n
Occasionally, I have stubborn students who challenge me. I remember one of the most rebellious students named Steve who constantly disrupted the class. Steve was a business student; he did not think that he needed to learn computer but \u201cIntroduction to Computer Systems\u201d was a required course for sales and marketing students. On the first week, he protested about pre-class reading assignments as he believed that teacher must lecture first. By asking students to read before class instead of lecturing means the teacher was lazy. Even I explained to the class about the advantage of pre-class reading and why we need to repeat the concept at least three times (Pre-class reading, class discussion, and post-discussion summery) he was not convinced. Not only he did not read assigned materials, he also chatted with others incessantly during class discussion. I gave him several warnings and he showed his disapproval by open the laptop and type emails during the class discussion. After class, he complained to me that I had embarrassed him in front of his girlfriend in class. I told him that he also embarrassed me by ignoring my warning and showed disrespect attitude. After several attempts to warn him without any result, I dismissed him from the class by telling him: \u201cEven you need this course to graduate but I do not think we can reach a compromise. You may want to take the class from other professors who may be more lenient to your behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n
I did not see him for several years until last month he showed up in my office. He had graduated and now working for a Marketing company in New York and he came to apologize for his past behavior. He talked about his job: \u201cI am sorry for what I did; you may never know how much I have learned from your class. Even I only had three weeks in your class but I have learned something that changes my career. I always think that the job of sales and marketing is to convince customers to buy whatever the company is selling. You taught me that today customers have access to all types of information, they know what they need and they have more choices to make rather than depend on the salesperson to convince them. To succeed companies should not create products then depend on salesperson to sell them but they must understand customers\u2019 needs before develop the products. In this technology driven world, the function of sales and marketing is using information technology to understand customers\u2019 needs to help company develop the right products. In the past, salesperson came to see customers with their products and tried to sell to them. Today they come to see customers with their laptop to gather information about customers\u2019 needs. The more they know about customers, the better they will be able to help them with their solutions. Successful salesperson must use technology to conduct research about each customer and visit them to gather additional information about their needs, their problems to deepen their understanding. Having these knowledge will make selling easier and increases the chance of doing a better long term relationship. Instead of merely sell products, they sell them the solution to their problems. This is what I learned from your class and it helped me in my career.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said: \u201cI was upset for a while after you dismissed me but I like how you handled the situation. You have taught me a humble lesson to my arrogance and I came to apologize for what I did. I want you to know that I had many \u201ceasy\u201d teachers but I did not remember them but I always remember \u201cdifficult\u201d teachers who make me learn and I appreciate their efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n
