The skill gap dilemma<\/p>\n
Today college students are facing a skills gap dilemma. Although companies are hiring workers with advanced technical skills but many college students are still confused about which skills they need and what field of study to select. This is a major issue for many countries due to the lack of understanding of what science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) skills are, what they do, and why there is such a high demand for them in this technology driven economy. As a result, all over the world millions of college graduates are unemployed or work in low-wage jobs with no future.<\/p>\n
There is a wrong notion that only developed countries need STEM skilled workers. The fact is developing countries need STEM skilled workers more because they need them to establish their own technology industries, to grow their own economy, and to create more jobs for their people. When I taught in Eastern Europe and Asia last summer, I found that there were huge demands for STEM skills in every country. A company owner in China told me that he had hundreds of job openings but could not find enough qualified applicants. Even India also had shortage. A senior manager cited the fact that there were over 2500 technology jobs posted in newspapers weekly without applicants. From Poland, Hungary to Malaysia and the Philippines, there was similar situation of job openings without applicants but at the same time there were many college graduates without jobs.<\/p>\n
Today most companies do not provide on the job training any more as trained workers often switch job, but they are willing to pay more for workers with skills and experience. As a result, the responsibility for developing skills is shifting from companies to job seekers. This shift puts a lot of pressure to the education systems to provide skills training that are needed by the industry but most schools are reluctant to do this and students get caught in this skills gap dilemma.<\/p>\n
A company owner in Asia told me that he tried to work with universities to identify the skills he needed to fill the jobs available but many universities rejected that as they did not want to be told of what they should teach. He said that a professor told him directly that universities are not vocational schools to train workers for the industry. I explained to him that the problem is difficult to solve because there are two contrasting views. The business\u2019 view is about having the proper skills to meet demands to stay competitive in this globalized market. Business people are familiar with the fast pace and eager to adapt change so they are frustrated with the slow response from universities. The educational view by contrast, is a much slower paced where stable is the principle so educators are very skeptical of any change. Even education improvement is only happening after many discussions, meetings, reviews, and negotiations.<\/p>\n
Another wrong notion among young people is having a college degree can help them get job. It is important for universities to let students know that a degree does not guarantee anything unless they have the skills, especially the skills that the job market demand. Students should take responsibility for establishing and managing their own career expectations at a time when competition for jobs has been fierce. Although universities educate students in many fields of study but students must select what is best for them based on a career guidelines with full information and facts about both local and global job market. It is important to state the fact that there are a lot of unemployed graduates because they select fields of study that have no demand or no chance to make a good living.<\/p>\n
Without proper guideline at the beginning, many students do not know these facts until too late and they can be disappointed. There should be a dialogue about what a college education is for and what it can help. Universities must also clearly state its expectations for students about their career and require students to work with career advisors about their selections. It is highly recommended that universities to arrange visits from people who represent the industry and business to explain certain careers to students. Currently there are limited number of career planning workshops to guide students when they enter college so it is up to them to figure out what to study and what career path to select. Without proper information that identify potential job opportunities that match with certain education and skillsets, the skills gap continue to threatens developing countries\u2019 economic growth and held back a lot of young people eager to be productive while earning a good wage.<\/p>\n
