D\u01b0\u1eddng nh\u01b0 l\u00e0 trong khi c\u00f3 nhi\u1ec1u b\u00e0n t\u00e1n trong nh\u1eefng ch\u1ee7 \u0111\u1ec1 n\u00e0y nh\u01b0ng khuy\u1ebfn kh\u00edch thanh ni\u00ean theo \u0111u\u1ed5i ngh\u1ec1 trong khu v\u1ef1c STEM v\u1eabn l\u00e0 m\u1ed9t th\u00e1ch th\u1ee9c l\u1edbn. Ch\u00fang ta v\u1eabn \u0111ang d\u00f9ng ph\u01b0\u01a1ng ph\u00e1p \u0111\u1ecdc b\u00e0i gi\u1ea3ng h\u1ed9i t\u1ee5 v\u00e0o l\u00ed thuy\u1ebft v\u00e0 ghi nh\u1edb. Kh\u00f3 chuy\u1ec3n sang m\u1ed9t h\u1ec7 th\u1ed1ng th\u1ef1c ti\u1ec5n h\u01a1n v\u1edbi kinh nghi\u1ec7m trao tay n\u01a1i h\u1ecdc sinh \u00e1p d\u1ee5ng \u0111i\u1ec1u h\u1ecd h\u1ecdc h\u1ed9i t\u1ee5 v\u00e0o ph\u00e1t ki\u1ebfn v\u00e0 thi\u1ebft k\u1ebf. Most of our lives are being impacted by science and technology innovations that change everything. The impact of technology is so obvious that most people do not even think about it anymore but accept it as a normal occurring. Last year when teaching in Asia, I gave a talk about the important of STEM education. After that a government officer happily told me: \u201cWe are already doing a lot with STEM. Look around you can see that many households already have flat screen TV, internet, and mobile phones, even in the countryside you can see many TV antennas all over the place and our young people are using iPhone, iPad and we are very successful in STEM.\u201d I did not want to correct his perception because he did not understand that they are the consumers of technology not creators of technology. The more people consume technology, the better for technology creators as they are the ones who benefit most. The fact is seventy eight people out of one hundred richest people on earth are technology creators and technology investors and the number is expected to rise as more technologies are being created.<\/p>\n<p>STEM education is about the application of science and technology to grow the economy, to create innovation products, to start new company, to meet high global demand as technology is the key driver for business efficiency and effectiveness. Today in every country there is a contradiction phenomenon: High number of unemployed college graduates and large number of jobs that have no applicants because these jobs require an education in STEM fields. If we look further, STEM skills are not just a source of jobs; they are a source of jobs that pay very well.<\/p>\n<p>The question is why there are not enough students who study STEM fields? It seems that while there are a lot of talks in these subjects but encouraging young people to pursue a career in STEM areas is still a big challenge. A professor told me: \u201cThere is a perception that STEM fields are difficult and only the best can succeed which discourage many students from selecting these fields. Another issue is there is not enough information about career planning to change this wrong perception to students early before they make decision. Many schools take a \u201cneutral\u201d position and allow students to make decision rather than encourage them toward STEM education because they do not have enough STEM professors and they want to balance all fields with students rather than have too many students in a few areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another professor told me: \u201cThere is another issue with the way we train students in STEM fields. We are still using lecturing method focusing on theories and memorization. It is difficult to move to a system that is more practical with hand-on experience where students apply what they learn with a focus on innovation and design. Our system is changing slowly and it may take ten or twenty more years to adapt to a new teaching method but we may miss the opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is a problem for young people and for the country. We need STEM-skilled workers to compete globally, and we will need even more in the future as the world is changing fast with more technologies being created. For the country to improve the economy and create more jobs, STEM education is needed. If there are not enough students entering STEM careers today then the country will not have enough skilled talents to meet future plans for growth in hi-tech industries.
