The global unemployment<\/p>\n

Last week, there was a report warning about the high number of unemployment among people under 24 year old. The report authors collected data from sixty five countries in the U.S., Europe, Asia and Australia and found that currently there are so many college graduates that could not find works.<\/strong>\u00a0The report found 32% of college graduates were working in low paying jobs that have nothing to do with their education. However, the report did not mention about the fields of study or degrees of these unemployed or the shortage of certain skills that could not be fulfill in many countries. As I shared the report with several colleagues, many were not surprised at all.<\/p>\n

A professor friend in France told me: \u201cThe fact is many unemployed graduates were studying arts, music, theater, social works, interior designing, public relation, or literature. These are popular fields among college students because they are easy to get in and easy to graduate. Even there are fewer job opportunities but the common attitude among students is to get into something easy and fun. Many only chase after a degree instead of certain skills. Most students are busy with their social activities in college and do not have the urgency to learn something that requires them to spend more time to study. They prefer to enjoy as much as they can now then think about the future later. It is a common attitude among many young European people today and it contributes to the high number of graduates with no job.\u201d<\/p>\n

A professor in Beijing had different explanation: \u201cThere are several million unemployed graduates in China and the number is increasing rapidly. For many years, Chinese government only focused on expand the manufacturing works for export but ignore the higher skilled works that are needed for building a strong economy. With current recession and high unemployment, more countries begin to bring works back home to improve their economies; China is facing a serious problem. As our export has declined by 35%, many factories have to close and lay off people. The national strategy that solely depends on export has backfired and devastated our economy. With the number of unemployment rising fast among labor workers it could be a disaster for our government. For years, many economists have warned that China cannot live off export alone but as long as foreign money was pouring in, nobody paid attention. For the past two decades, we only focused on low labor skills and did not put efforts in develop higher skills which were the foundation of any economy so there were unbalance situations. Since there is no need for higher skilled, our education system does not need to change and our students do not have the current skills and that is why college educated students have difficult time to find job. Now as our economy is shrinking, we do not know what to do. Without an internal foundation to keep the economy balance it would be very difficult to maintain our economy position in the future. Of course, there will be some major restructuring soon but it will make more people unhappy. When people have enjoyed a good time for a while, it is difficult to endure hardship. Now we have high number of unemployment in both educated and uneducated young people and there is no solution for it. With several million angry young people, it is really a difficult problem to solve.<\/p>\n

Another professor in Spain lamented: \u201cMost people blame the economy and the government. Many hope that when the economy recovers, thing will be better but they are just dreaming. In today’s globalization, competition is fierce. The issue is many graduates believe that it is difficult to find job in a bad economy but when thing get better, things will change so they decided to wait. Of course nobody know when will the economy get better? Even the best economists could not even predict. So they keep waiting and as years pass, new group of graduates would come in so the number of unemployed graduates keeps on increasing then suddenly last year, it exploded as the anger sets in and young students took to the street and demand changes in government. You probably saw what happened in Spain and Greece in the past year. Nobody could predict what will happen next.\u201d<\/p>\n

Recently, the job market is improving in the U.S as unemployment is declining but that is not enough because there are still a high number of college graduates without job. However U.S graduates are much more aware of the economy situation than European or Asian students and they are more determined. When they could not find job, a majority are working part time in restaurants, bookstores, retail business rather than waiting for the economy to get better. Many students return to schools for another degree, especially in high demand areas such as health care and technology. According to a market analyst, even with more students switched to technology area, the shortage of skilled workers will still remain for at least another ten years.<\/p>\n
