A teacher wrote to me: \u201cI like to update the latest technology information and use active learning method in my class but other faculties do not like that. They told me that I cannot change the training curriculum or using different method because it confuses students. They told me that I must follow textbooks and lecturing method. What do you think? Answer: There are always different opinions among educators about what should be taught and how it should be taught. As long as you are following the school\u2019s guidelines on curriculum, you are doing your job. Do not let others to tell you what to do. After all, it is the students who benefit from your teaching, not others. By keeping up with the latest information in your class, you are helping your students to stay current with technology trends. Technology changes fast and it is important to stay up to date rather than following textbooks that may be old or even obsolete.<\/p>\n
One of the key topics today among faculty is whether students should be taught practical skills training for job versus learning theories to allow them to have broader knowledge. There are many different opinions about the purpose of a college education, whether we should educate students for comprehensive knowledge or train them to get jobs. I think the answer is in the middle of the two opposite ideas. We do NOT train students solely on theories so they can recite a lot of formulas but cannot apply them to anything. But we also do NOT train them to apply something without understand the principles behind every application. We must educate our students to think critically, to be able to apply what they learned to solve problems, and more than that, to be responsible for their actions, to be honest and ethical, to have passion on continuous learning so they can be positive contributors to society and humanity.<\/p>\n
While there are different teaching and learning methods, as educators we all care about our students so we should focus on the students as the common ground for all of us, with different opinions, to work together. As educators, we must keep the students in mind and do whatever best for them. No one choose to be teachers to make money. No one wants to be teachers to get famous. We choose to be teachers because we care for the future generations and we need to focus on what would be best for our students rather than focus on our opinions and personality conflict. Teaching is about motivating students not only to learn, but teaching them how to learn, and doing so in a manner that is relevant, and meaningful. We all have passion about what we do and want to convey that passion to our students. We all want to keep on top of our profession by learning more about new things and new methods, so we can be at the leading edge as much as possible. We know that knowledge should not be confined only scholarly philosophies but bridging the gap between theory and practice. That is why good teachers do not always having a fixed agenda and being rigid, but being flexible, experimenting, and having the confidence to react and adjust to changing circumstances. It means sometime we must deviate from the course materials when there is better materials elsewhere. There is room for everyone\u2019s opinion and diverse teaching approaches. If you are young teachers, you still have a lot to learn and to improve but if you have been teaching for many years, you may want to deviate from the tendency to stay rigid with what you have been doing for years.<\/p>\n
There is a major change in the way schools should educate students to meet the need of the 21st century by governments all over the world. Some countries change fast and already ahead of others such as Finland, Singapore, and S. Korea etc. Some are still slow to change and probably may not change much. And there are differences of opinion about the speed of change too. Even before you discuss lecturing method versus active method, there are going to be differences of opinion as to the extent to which way the school should do. Some people might say we should not change anything and other will say we have to change it anyway. If a faculty member feels very strongly about a particular issue, find out why it is so important to this person. I would ask \u201cCan you explain to me why you feel so strongly about it?
