Advices on Active Learning<\/p>\n
Whenever I teach in Asia, I often share my experience using Active Learning method with teachers there. Because this is a different method, most students are not familiar with it, I advise teachers to spend more time to explain the new method to students and implement it slowly, one step at a time.<\/p>\n
Few years ago, a young teacher told me that he videotaped all lectures to put on website so students watch them as many times as they needed. He said that he liked this method because he did not have to lecture anymore. I asked him: \u201cHow many students are watching your video lectures? How do you know that they are learning something?” He could not answer so I explained: \u201cActive learning is NOT about replacing class lectures with videos. Develop video lectures for students to watch BEFORE the class is only the first step. The next step is to verify that they are learning something from the videos by having class discussions, team exercises, and quizzes to measure their learning. From these activities, the teachers can corrects any misunderstanding, confusion and explain the materials in more detail to ensure that students are learning the materials.\u201d<\/p>\n
Active learning method involves changes in the roles and responsibilities of students (learners) and teachers (facilitators). In this method, students are responsible for their own learning by watching videos or reading materials BEFORE coming to class. Class time is used for discussion (To verify that students do learn the materials) then applies the concept in exercises or quizzes (To develop the skills.) Students are encouraged to work in collaboration with others during class discussions or team exercises but they must work on quizzes and tests individually to prove that they have learned the materials. In this method, the role of teachers is changing from teaching to facilitating the learning process. Teachers provide learning materials and encourage students to learn them before class as class time is spent on discussions where teachers listen carefully for each student\u2019s point of view and determine whether they understand the materials or not. Teachers correct any misunderstanding and encourage them to engage more in deeper level of discussions.<\/p>\n
Class discussion is one of the key element in Active Learning method and teachers must define the goals for the discussion or what they want students to learn from\u2029the discussion? Teachers must plan and organize all questions ahead to verify that students understand the basic concepts before go to the deeper level. Questions should never be random but carefully design to get the maximum effect. After each discussion, teachers should summarize of all key points of the discussion.<\/p>\n
A teacher once told me: \u201cI had a problem; many parents came to school and complained that I did not teach anything as students had to teach themselves in my course. And the school administrator was not happy.\u201d<\/p>\n
I told him: \u201cBefore using the Active learning method, you need to explain to students about the approach, your expectation and slowly let them adapt to the new method. Without this clear explanation, students will confuse. Of course, both parents and students believe that teachers should tell students what they need to know by lecturing. By asking they learn by themselves means the teacher is not doing the job.\u201d<\/p>\n
He complained: \u201cMost students do not like this method. They want traditional lecturing so they can just sit and listen. When they have to actively searching for answers or participate in class discussion, they hate it and complain to schools administrators so I am not sure if I should continue to use this method.\u201d<\/p>\n
I advised: \u201cWhen you are doing something not as expected, students will think that you are lazy or do not know the answer. To use Active learning method you cannot rush. You could start by giving them something to read before class then asking them questions in class to verify that they do read the materials or at least know something about it. You should tell them that that you will explain more but not until they participate in class discussion first. Rather than making them learn everything on their own, you can give them some hints and let them figure out the rest. Eventually students will figure out why you are doing it and begin to shift their learning to be more active.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cStudents will often resist first but do not react to them. If you switch back to the lecturing method, you will strengthen their view about you as a bad teacher. I suggest that you explain to them that learning is a constructive process where they have to build their own knowledge and skills. Learning is not an absorbing process where they memorize thing because they will forget and never develop the needed skills. Therefore, students must learn to be more responsible for their own learning because they have to compete for a few positions and to do well in a world driven by technology.<\/p>\n
The traditional lecturing method is effective in the past when most things were stable and slow but may not effective today as technology drives everything at the speed of the Internet. In the past, students achieve success by memorizing the content, regurgitating that information onto exams, get degree and jobs then later forget most of it. In the world of constantly changing technology, new material is builds upon the material from the previous classes; knowledge is a construction of continuous building and applying. It is critical for students to develop these new learning skills because learning never stop as technology changes, business changes and job will change too. That is why we change the new approach in teaching when students are responsible for their own learning. As teachers, your roles are to provide them with materials to learn then ask questions and assign tasks that stimulate their thinking beyond rote memorization. You help them to advance their learning from basics to more profound and support them in the development of skills by applying them to solve problems. Like anything new, it is difficult in the beginning but over time it will work well as students will be more familiar with the new method and they will appreciate it.\u201d<\/p>\n
