The coming crisis<\/p>\n
According to a global study, despite the shortage of science and technology skilled workers, the number of students enrolling in these fields was still lower than expected; which means the shortage of skilled workers will continue into the future. The study found three key reasons for the low enrollment:\u00a0 First, many students were not prepared to study science and technology because they do not have good foundation in high school. Second, there is a shortage of qualified technology teachers and students often blamed poor teaching as the reason for them not to enroll in technology field. Third, many training programs were developed several years ago, therefore obsolete and students felt learning obsoleted technology was not worth the effort.<\/p>\n
It is clear from this study that necessary steps must be taken to improve the number of students enrolling in the science and technology fields. The first problem is not difficult to solve, universities can create additional remedial courses to rebuild the foundation for students who may not have these skills in high school so they can succeed at university levels. The second problem is also not difficult to solve but it requires a strong commitments from university administrators to allocate resources to provide additional trainings to faculty who teach science and technology. The third solution may be difficult as it requires universities to overhaul their existing training programs and redesign them to meet society needs. But without these solutions, a country cannot develop enough skilled workers in science and technology to improve its economy.<\/p>\n
The first decade of the 21st century is a period of profound scientific and technology innovations where technology changes everything. It also changes the balance of economic power among nations as we see the downfall of many countries and the rise of others. These changes allow some countries to get more advantages but also pull others down economically and they may never catch up. An economist explains: \u201cTechnology helps some countries to advancing their economy with plenty of jobs; but it also makes others who could not catch up, falling into chaotic, higher unemployment, more violent, and eventually their economy will collapse.\u201d<\/p>\n
If you look at these countries, their education systems are unchanged for many years and probably will not change much. Their students are struggling with textbooks that are out of date; their teachers are struggling with higher cost of living due to their low salary. When teachers cannot focus on teaching, students cannot learn well and it will spread throughout the entire education system. When elementary students cannot complete simple math equations or write complete sentences, they will not do well in high school and dropout. In many African countries, the dropout rate in high school is 67% and in Asia, it is 38%. Even if students can overcome some obstacles to go to college, the struggle will continue and the rate of college dropout among them is also high (47%). In the past, these dropout students could work in agriculture areas or in factories as labor workers. But today technologies are used to increase efficiency with robots and factory automation so there are fewer jobs for unskilled labors. Today most jobs require higher education levels and companies only hire people with certain technology skill sets. This means many young people will be unemployed for a long time or maybe for the rest of their lives. In fact, the disadvantages for those who do not receive good education are already prevalent. In these countries, the youth unemployment is reaching a boiling point and could explode anytime.<\/p>\n
Many young students may not pay attention to this changing world. In just a few years their future prospects will be determined by how much they know and what skills they have in the science and technology areas. If they do not receive proper guidance now and unprepared for the next few years, they will be among millions of the unemployed and unskilled people. The skills gap that happens throughout the education system will evolve into a gap of income among people and create a society divided between the educated and uneducated, the skilled and unskilled, the rich and the poor. Such extreme divisions will create a lot of problems for the society and for the world.<\/p>\n
To solve this coming crisis, all efforts must be concentrating on improving the education system to focus on science and technology. The risks are too high to continue not paying attention. The damage will soon be irreversible if we do not act now.<\/p>\n
