Why university cannot change?<\/p>\n
According to a study, universities and industries do not agree on how well prepared students are for the job market upon graduation. Most university administrators believe that their graduates are well prepared for jobs in the industry while company managers do not think so. An industry representative complains: \u201cMany things that they are teaching in university today are obsolete. When we hire their graduates, we have to retrain them and it is costly. The problem is our industry needs qualified IT workers but we cannot hire enough of them which means the shortage will continue.\u201d<\/p>\n
This disagreement is severe when it comes to advanced technical skills such as cloud computing, mobile applications development, big data analytics and information technology security as even today only few universities have complete training programs in these skills. The industry representative explains: \u201cWe need to have at least two million skilled workers in these areas in the next five years but there are only few thousands qualified people to fill these jobs. Universities said it will take several years to develop training programs, and it is not acceptable.\u201d An university representative explains: \u201cIt takes time to develop training programs and hire qualified professors. Technology changes so fast and it is difficult to catch up.\u201d<\/p>\n
People often ask why universities cannot improve their trainings to meet the industry needs. According to the study, there are several reasons: First, education program is created by academic professors who think they know what is best for students and it may not be what the industry needs. Many professors believe university is not a vocational school that train workers for the industry. Second, universities are independent entities and there is no urgency to change; the common attitude is why bothered to do something unnecessary? Third, university\u2018s goal is to transfer knowledge to students and it does that by teaching them about the past based on the collective knowledge of professors on the subject. Most professors are educated several years ago so their knowledge is in the past, even if they learn new things but it is not easy to change what they already know best. Most education systems are based on a hierarchy system where seniority has advantage; the longer you teach, the higher position you have, so professors may continue to teach until they reach retirements at the age of 60s or 70s. If they begin teaching in their late 20s that means their knowledge is 30 to 40 years old. Unless there are requirements to upgrade the trainings, many continue to teach what they know well. That is why many training programs are difficult to change even it may be obsolete. Fourth, stability is a key component in education and most school administrators prefer to keep it that way rather than doing something that may disrupt the stability of the school.<\/p>\n
In this fast changing world, students need to understand the impact of technology in economic, social, cultural, and the environment. The \u201cflat world\u201d demands that students not only understand the impact in their country, but also have knowledge of other countries and how they are dealing with technology too. To meet the need of the 21st century, students must be more active in planning their career, selecting the right field of study, and the right university to attend.
