Maturity and responsibilities<\/p>\n
Students go to school to get educated. That means they must take an active role in their learning by understand that they are responsible for their success. They must make choices and take appropriated actions that help them to achieve their educational goals. However responsibility requires certain degree of maturity but some students may not mature enough to go to college.<\/p>\n
In many western countries, students are taught to be responsible for their own actions very early; they understand that college is a transition time between dependency on their family and to be on their own. However that is not the case in Asia where many students are still relying on family\u2019s supports, even after they completed college as some are not matured enough to be on their own. College is a place where students are accepted based on academic achievement but no one can measure whether they are matured enough to be responsible for their actions. Success in education depends on the efforts and time that students put into their work but immatured students often do not put in enough efforts and fail.<\/p>\n
Students mature during the time they spend in school, from elementary, high school then college based on what they are taught. In elementary school, students should be taught about relationships, family values to develop a sense of respect for parents, teachers, and the elders which are the foundation for a good personal character. In high school, students should be taught to broaden their perspective from family to country, culture, history, social justice, and integrity to develop their sense of good citizenship. In college, students should be taught more about their own responsibilities, accountability and specific skills so they can be an ethical professionals in their field. Unfortunately, today many schools are focusing on the transfer of academic knowledge but not on personal development.<\/p>\n
Students are often told that the best way to succeed in college is to study hard; but college is more than just academics learning; it is also about learning how to be responsible adults. It is about developing relationships with professors and other students. It is the \u201ccollege experience\u201d and education that enable young students to mature into responsible professionals. By meeting more people, opening their mind to different ideas, and understand about themselves and others, they grow up and mature. With millions of young students are attending colleges today, colleges has a responsibility to ensure that all students are guided properly in their education goals as education goals should be more than just academics. College should help students to plan their career, develop positive personal character and motivate them to achieve them. Motivation is the driver that allows each of them to develop into responsible professional. In other words, college should provide the tools and the environment necessary for students to successfully achieve their education goals and become contributors to the society.<\/p>\n
Although colleges have responsibilities to students and society but they are not solely responsible for the outcomes of their students. Colleges can provide opportunities for interaction and establish a good learning environment. Responsible students must take full responsibility of their actions too by attending and participating in classes; complete the assigned work in a timely manner with attention to quality of work; dedicate sufficient time to learn; and complies with college policies and rules.<\/p>\n
