It is important to understand that technology innovations and automation will eliminate a lot of jobs but it will also create a lot of new ones. But all new jobs will require certain knowledge and skills that are taught mostly in college. So a college education is needed if you want to do well in this \u201cinformation technology age\u201d.<\/p>\n
According to the vision, within the next ten years most people will equip their house with \u201csmart devices\u201d so their kitchen, washing machine, and bathroom will do most of the works based on what people program them to do. Medical sensors in the smartphones will monitoring people\u2019s health and contact hospital and doctors when needed so they do not need to see doctor anymore. Everything people eat will be monitored by special applications on their wearable clothing to calculate the number of calories intake and warn them about their eating habit as well as preventing certain diseases. Today all smartphones have health applications but these still are the basics, in the next few years there will be more. Apple, Google, Microsoft are investing a lot of money for health and medical applications as they are predicted to be the next highly profitable market.<\/p>\n
Although the vision for the near future is clear and the technologies are available now but there are not enough skilled workers to implement them. According to the technology industry council, to achieve this vision, the world will need five to ten million highly educated technology workers since there is not enough, it will take longer for it to happen. But if it happens, the benefit can be several trillion dollars per year add to the current economy and it will change the current global economy from recovery to significant growth.<\/p>\n
Whether you believe in this vision or not, it is happening faster than you think. I have seen several self-driving cars as well as delivery drones being tested already. I have seen robots in factories doing most of the works. I have used several mobile health applications and wearable devices so they are real, not fiction. I have talked to several startup companies who implemented these technologies and they told me that they need a lot of highly skilled workers. A startup founder said: \u201cTechnology changes so fast and it is difficult to convince people that we can improve the quality of life many times but we expect the younger generations who are growing up with technology to believe in this because there are many job opportunities waiting for them. Technology is a vast area with so many new things and most have been invented in recent years so new training programs are needed to develop the next generation of technology workers.\u201d<\/p>\n
That means current education system must change to accommodate the needs as there will be a global competition for talented workers. The number of science and technology jobs will increase in countries that have the best education. Countries that fail to change will see a deteriorating of their economy with high unemployment.<\/p>\n
Countries that successfully made the transformation such as Singapore, S. Korea, Finland, and Japan have seen their economies improved significantly but countries that failed to response to education reform were struggle economically and may not be able to catch up. Manufacturing-based economy that build on labor will see that their labor jobs are disappearing fast and soon most labor works will be eliminated. An analyst wrote: \u201cThe industrial age is over; we are in the technology age with new skills, new demands, and new technology. Creating a 21st century workforce requires teaching 21st century skills and these skill-set include the ability to solve problems by thinking creatively and generating new ideas. To many young people, with new challenges arise new opportunities to create their own startup and their own destiny.<\/p>\n
Technology already created profound changes in every area but it is only the beginning as we will see more changes in the near future all over the world. To meet the need of the 21st century, university must move quickly from traditional knowledge transfer to play an active role in develop highly skilled workforce for the country. If you are students who are undecided about which field to study, my advice is select science and technology areas and you will do well.
