Which knowledge that they need to get a good job? Which courses they need to take to prepare for the future? What programming languages should they learn? What technologies should they know? What technical books should they read? My answer is simply: \u201cAll they need is to develop a lifelong learning attitude.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n My simple logic is: Programming languages will change; technologies will change; and skills will come and go but your attitude for learning will never change. Today mobility may be hot but who know what will be next? Few years ago, Microsoft was the dominant force in the computer market but today Apple and Google are the most powerful but no one knows who will be next? Today Java is the popular language but there are Python and Ruby emerging and who know which programming language will happen next? You may think \u201cComputer Science 50\u201d is the best course that you have taken but there are \u201cBig data 101\u201d and \u201cSoftware Engineering architecture 205\u201d and who know which one is better? Basically there is only one answer: You need to continuous learning no matter what technology is emerging and which programing language is popular. As long as you are passionate about learning, you will do well.<\/p>\n If you start with a specific technology, you will be upset when it becomes obsolete because technology does change. If you want to know which programming language to focus on then you will not be happy when others come around. The right way to do is to be ready to learn new things by open mind and keep yourself current with whatever happens in the technology world. Lifelong learning is the ONLY skill you need and the ONLY way to survive in this fast changing world. You will do well in everything if you make \u201cLifelong learning\u201d as part of your life. To do that you need to read more to keep up with all the changes. Today it is much easier because almost everything you need is available on the Internet.<\/p>\n Most students consider learning with formal education in schools but learning should not stop when you graduate. \u201cSchooling\u201d is only one type of learning. There are many opportunities to further your knowledge throughout your life. You learn new things when you work, you learn new thing when you make mistake, you learn new thing all the time. However, lifelong learning is about maintaining a positive attitude to learning both for personal and professional development. You are motivated to learn because it improves your skills and your understanding of the world around you and it provides you with better opportunities to enrich your life. It will keep you more confidence and more adaptable to change when it happens.<\/p>\n The programming languages that you learn, the technologies that you use are just part of your lifelong learning as you always learning new thing when changes happen. Today you learn Java but\u00a0tomorrow\u00a0you may learn Python, whatever is important to you. Today you are using personal computer but\u00a0tomorrow\u00a0you may use smartphone, it does not matter what device that you use, you know what to do as you always learning. When you graduate and looking for job, companies are looking for specific skills and if you have them you will get the job. However, you cannot keep the same skills and expect them to last forever, technology changes so you must change too. You must know that company hires you because of your skills but they can fire you when you do not have the skills that they need. To keep your job, you must keep on learning to be a valuable employee. By having a lifelong learning attitude, you will advance your career by moving upward due to your ability to learn new things.<\/p>\n Lifelong learning requires self-motivation. You need to feel passionate about learning and your ability to learn then you will do well. Lifelong learning requires that you acquire new information through reading, listening, observing, practicing, and applying as opportunities are all around you. The key is to acquire relevant and meaningful information and develop this into your own knowledge and skills. By applying what you have acquired and asking yourself questions such as: \u2018How does this skill helps in my career?\u2019 or \u2018What has this new knowledge taught me about myself? It will help you to go beyond the traditional learning process and enter into a profound learning process that you never experience before.<\/p>\n If you look into the history of technology companies, you will see that there is a cycle of up and down. When the company is on the downside, they lay off a lot of people; most of them are no longer needed because they do not have the needed skills for the company. If you look at IBM, most people who worked on mainframe computers were gone when personal computer dominated the market. If you look at Microsoft, most people who worked on Window XP or Window 7 were told to leave because technology changes. In the past few years, a lot of technical people become unemployed and many may never get another job because they cannot learn new thing. For many years they are content of what they know but fail to develop lifelong learning habit. They cannot change now because it is too late, there are many skilled persons who aggressively seize their job. Today the survival rule is: \u201cIt is not important of how much you know but how fast can you learn.\u201d<\/p>\n According to the industry report, over 75% of people that got lay-off in the past few years were managers when companies began to \u201cflat out\u201d the infrastructure to reduce bureaucracy and be flexible in respond to the changing market. It happened all over the world, from the U.S and UK to Germany, Scandinavia but it is happening now in Japan and S. Korea who used to have the \u201cEmployment for life\u201d policies. These conservative countries must change as their economy is stagnated. Their leaders know that without changing fast, they cannot compete. My Japanese friend told me that it is a big shock to most managers as they believe that their jobs are secured. When companies such as Sony, Panasonic, Hitachi, Toyota, and Honda are losing money and cannot compete, dramatic actions are needed and these people are told that they are no longer needed. It is predicted that China, Malaysia and India will also change soon as global competition is fierce and without taking necessary actions, they cannot keep their economy growing.<\/p>\n My advice is certain technologies or programming languages may be here today and gone\u00a0tomorrow\u00a0but having a lifelong learning attitude is the most precious skill that you can have and should have then you never have to worry about your future.
