The mobile apps market<\/p>\n
According to an industry report (July 2014) there is an Information Technology (IT) skills shortage globally but the most severe is in mobile applications development. This is critical because mobility is one of the fastest growing areas as more people are using smartphones, tablets than ever.\u00a0 The report stated that over 70% of company hiring in 2013 was in mobile applications development and demand has reached a critical level. A Wall Street analyst warned: \u201cAs more companies are moving to mobile the demand is very high but the supply is low. Currently the market needs about a million mobile developers but next few years when the trend of \u201cInternet of everything\u201d emerges, the demand could get as high as three to five million new jobs in mobile development alone. If U.S companies could not hire enough workers, they will not be able to grow as expected and it could slow down the economic recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite the fast growth in mobile applications, there are not enough qualified college graduates to fill these jobs. The report found that less than half universities have courses in mobility, many are still teaching application development for Personal Computer although the demand has decreased. A school officer lamented: \u201cIt is obvious that we do not coordinate our trainings with the industry demand. Many companies are having difficulty with the lack of mobile app workers and we are worrying about our graduates may not have the needed skills to get good job.\u201d The situation will get worst because the demand will push the salary of mobile developers higher and it will force companies to outsource mobile apps to lower cost countries.<\/p>\n
According to the report, within the next five years most companies will need fewer business workers but more technology workers because everything will be automated and company leaders must find enough technical workers to make it happens, else they will not be able to survive this competitive world. The author wrote that it does not matter about the type of business or how large or small the company is, all companies will need technology workers. The report stated that the total number of mobile app downloads this year is exceeding 100 billion and still increasing. Most of the downloaded apps are free but it does not mean developers do not make money because they get more money by putting advertisements on their apps. As more people are using mobile apps, the mobile advertising market is exploding as more companies want to advertise on mobile rather than PC and it makes app developers more money than selling the apps on the App stores.<\/p>\n
Currently the trend is to create mobile personal assistants for consumers: Apple is engineering Siri to better anticipate user needs, Google is pouring a lot of money into Google Now, and Yahoo acquired Intelligent Labs to put itself in the competition as well. The competition among software giants already begin and it is good news for mobile apps developers as their future is very bright.<\/p>\n
