A student wrote to me: \u201cMy parents want me to study computer science. I do not like math and computer but want to pursue a degree in Public Relations. I do not want to make my parents unhappy but I also do not want to learn something that I do not like. Currently I do not know what to do? Please help.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: For many years of teaching, I found that students who are successful usually studying something that they like. Students rarely achieve success studying what they hate. If they like a subject they often do well, and if they do well, they will learn more and become very good at it. These success factors are important in career planning. The fact is if students study something that they do not like, even they graduate and have a job, they will not enjoy it or advance in their career.<\/p>\n
My questions are: Do you know exactly what you want and why you want it? Have you received proper career guidance based on your interest and capability? Do you know your strengths as well as weaknesses? Do you know how to distinguish between an interest and a passion? Do you know the different between a hobby and a career? When planning for a career, there are several factors that you need to consider: You have to know your passion, your love of doing something so you can put in the efforts to learn more to build a strong foundation where your career can be built upon. You also have to look at the job market for practical reason and knowing that what you learn in school can help you to build a career where you can make a good living. You have to understand that you cannot be dependent on your family to take care of you forever, so you must select something that can help you to be independent as you do have a choice on what you want to do with your life.<\/p>\n
College students often have conflicts about their choice of study with their parents. Most parents want something good for their children based on their own opinions without consult their children about what they like as well as their strengths and weaknesses. Many students often select their study based on what they are good at in high school or influence by friends, the media based on a \u201cwishful thinking\u201d without understand the practical aspect of a career and the job market. Both parents and children need to understand each other and spend time to discuss using facts and data and try not to be emotional about it.<\/p>\n
Since you want to pursue a career in Public Relation (P.R), you need to gather enough information about this field to discuss with your parents. You need to know why you want to select this field of study. Based on my limited knowledge, P.R is a special field that requires effective communication, good writing skills and a lot of experience to deal with the public. A P.R person represents the company to the public so the job requires that you be familiar with the company\u2019s operation as well as having the trust of company owners and managers to representing them in public. In the U.S. most companies promote people who work there for a long time and know the company operation well into this position rather than hiring someone just graduate from college so the job opportunity for newly graduates may be difficult to find. Since most careers in public relations require certain experience in publicity work such as writing press releases to journalists and media publications; handle all press inquiries regarding the company; and prepare detailed information to press conferences and public trade shows. An experienced P.R person is hard to find and making mistake is critical so this is not an easy career as many people may think.<\/p>\n
Another fact that you may need is to talk to people who graduated from this field and ask them for advices. You may want to know what types of job are they working now and how much they are making. You need to have all the facts and data to begin a discussion with your parents. Since job market varies in different countries, and I do not know much about this field to give you proper advice.
