Why use Active Learning?<\/p>\n
A teacher wrote to me: “I read your blogs about Active learning and admire you for introduce the new teaching method but I am not convincing that this method is better than traditional lecturing method. Why should we change the way we teach when our students are doing well. Why students should be doing all the learning tasks themselves when they can better learn from the teachers?<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Answer: As teachers, you make decision on how you teach, what method you use, and what would be best for the students. You have a choice to select what is best for you and for your students. If the teachers focus their attention on HOW the students learn rather then WHAT the students learn then students will learn more. When students learn the materials on their own then discuss with their friends in class, they understand more. When students are able to apply them to solve problems, the course materials are becoming more meaningful to them. When students understand why the materials are important, why they must know it, and how it can be integrated in what they already know, these new materials will become their own knowledge and that is how they should learn.<\/p>\n
A knowledge based mostly on listening to a lecture is somebody\u2019s knowledge. If they can cram them in their heads and recall them during exam, they may do well but they may not remember them after exam and may not be able to apply them. Of course, students cannot learn everything by themselves, they still need teachers to guide them, to correct them, to support them so the job of the teachers is lecturing less but correcting and guiding more. When students learn something on their own, it becomes their own knowledge then they remember it longer. By allowing students to focus on HOW to develop their own knowledge, students will learn not only the course materials but also additional materials to broaden their knowledge. When they receive proper guidance, encouragement, and supports from teachers, they are developing their independent learning skills that lead to a lifelong learning attitude. When students learn to ask more questions, learn to find correct answers, learn to challenge reasons, to consider alternatives, to evaluate evidence, they learn to solve problems. The development of these learning skills should be enhanced by feedbacks and guidance from the teachers.<\/p>\n
Some teachers are reluctant to adopt active learning method because of the increased responsibility that students must do all the learnings. As teachers, they are worried that students may not be able to do it on their own but without give it a try how do you know that students can learn by themselves? Just like any parents would worry that a baby who learn to walk may fall, but by not allowing a baby to walk, the baby will fall more, and the learning to walk will take much longer. Today students must learn on \u201cHow to learn\u201d not \u201cWhat to learn\u201d because materials will change, what are taught today may be obsolete by\u00a0tomorrow. There is nothing wrong with the lecturing method, it works well for thousands of year but there is another alternative method that maybe better for today\u2019s environment.<\/p>\n
I believe that by changing the way we teach, good students will be changed by what they learn. They will develop deeper understanding of whatever they learned. They will open their view for better understanding of who they are, how they think, what they can do and what they see in the world around them. When students can learn everything on their own, it is a transformative experience with profound change as they not just knowing the materials, but equipped to learn more on their own and for themselves.<\/p>\n
I believe these are good reasons to change the way we teach; to move away from the teacher-transmitted knowledge toward more student-self learning. Of course there is a need for teachers in guiding, encouraging, supporting and telling students what they need to know and ought to do. The process of moving toward active learning is an evolution process for both teachers and students, and it takes time.
