A survey on IT careers<\/p>\n
Last night, I read an article about a survey of young people in twenty two countries, including the U.S, UK, Germany, Japan, China, and India etc. The author conducted an interview of 5,000 people between the age of 15 to 25 about education and career aspiration. Nearly all of them said that they want a career, not just a job. The author wrote: \u201cRecent recession and high unemployment have taught many young people to distinguish a career from a job and what they must do to achieve their educational goals.\u201d In his interview, a young high school student explained: \u201cA career is what you choose as a profession to make a living and you are happy with what you do. On the other hand, a job is what you must do to get paid and it may not what you want but you need it. People do not change career but they will change job often, either to get better salary or because they do not like what they do.\u201d\u00a0 Another student added: \u201cA job is something that is not fulfilling for you. It is something that you do to make money but you do not enjoy it. A career is something that you may have to go to school to have the training, it is something that you enjoy doing and make a good living at.\u201d The author wrote: \u201cKnowing the difference is the first step to build a career and it is important for young people to look forward to their future with clear career goals in mind.\u201d<\/p>\n
Among the top careers that young people want is Information technology with 68% of the interviewers said they want to study IT. The author wrote: \u201cFew years ago the most desirable career was finance or banking but the financial crisis had changed their view as there were a large numbers of unemployed business graduates in every country. Young people now are much better in monitoring the market\u2019s trends and they see information technology as the most desirable career that they can pursue.\u201d In the interview, a first year college student said: \u201cAccording to government\u2019s report there are several million of IT job openings each year but not enough graduates to meet that need. I do not want to miss this opportunity.\u201d Another student added: \u201cMore than half of the millionaires and billionaires in the world came from technology area and I want to be part of this group.\u201d<\/p>\n
The author wrote: \u201cIt is easy to conclude that information technology is the best career choice today for young people but providing the quality training needs to meet this demand is not simple. Despite high unemployment among college graduates, the IT industry is still struggling to fill job vacancies because there are not enough qualified applicants. This situation is expected to continue as the demand for IT workers will outpace the supply. If IT career promise high wages, good careers with many openings and young people want to study IT then why there are not enough graduates to meet the needs? Why seven out of ten young people like to select IT career as their top choices, but few are enrolling?<\/p>\n
He concluded: \u201cHere are some facts based on my interviews with young students: About 84% of college choices were made by parents, not students and most parents are not sure what \u201cIT\u201d means and do not have adequate information about IT jobs. Among young people, nearly all of them think IT requires strong math and science skills which are not their favorite subjects in high schools. Many students afraid that they will not do well if they select IT in college because they do not have strong foundation in math and science. Even they enroll in IT but the quality of many training programs are not kept current to meet the needs. To get more young people into IT field, it is important to start educate them about IT careers and what it requires in high school. By giving clear direction, strong guidance about career goals for young people, it is possible to increase the enrollment number in IT fields but it is also important to improve the quality of college training to develop skilled workers with the up to date skills to meet industry needs.
