How did a small company grew to a largest online company in the world within few short years?<\/p>\n<p>According to the article, it is the company founder Jeff Bezos\u2019s vision that helped to build the company from tiny startup to giant global company. In his letter to his managers after Amazon was founded, Mr. Bezos wrote about the hiring strategy for his company: &#8220;It would be impossible to produce results in an environment as dynamic as the Internet without extraordinary people\u2026\u201d Basically hiring the most talented workers is the single most important element of Amazon&#8217;s success and he told his managers to hire people based on three critical factors.<\/p>\n<p>The first critical factor is about \u201cadmiration\u201d. He wanted hiring managers to admire the people who they hire to their teams. He believes that admiration means that a hiring person must be someone who could be an example to other and has something team members could learn from. From this criterion alone, the standard for hiring is being kept very high.<\/p>\n<p>The second critical factor is about \u201cgrowing the company\u201d. He envisioned that each new hire would continue to help the company to grow and expand its business which means they must think ahead toward the future and have new skills that contribute to the company. He wrote: &#8220;The hiring standard has to continuously go up. I ask people to visualize the company\u00a0five years from now. At that point, each of us should look around and say, &#8216;the standards are so high now, I&#8217;m glad I got in when I did!'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The last critical factor he seeks from new hires is a distinctive skill or interest to contribute to the company&#8217;s culture and help cultivate a fun and interesting workplace. And it doesn&#8217;t have to be related to the job. He gives the example of one employee who is a National Spelling Bee champion. While there&#8217;s a lot to be said for being well-rounded, it&#8217;s the pointy ones that Bezos wants.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s been over 15 years since Bezos wrote about these hiring critical factors, but given Amazon&#8217;s success, his vision of continuous growing and expanding based on the talents that he hired is certainly the most important factor that drive the company\u2019s success. Today success is depending on the talents of people in the company and if you do not know this, you should be learning from this lesson. To grow a company you must grow your team first and build a company culture of excellence by have a strong hiring process.
