Career guidance in education system<\/p>\n
Managing a career is a lifelong process which needs to start as early as possible but currently most schools does not provide guidance on career management. To many students, career is something to be considered AFTER graduated which may explain why there are many unemployed college graduates. Career planning is not something that taught to unemployed people to find job but should be taught to all students to make the right decision BEFORE entering college. Every student must ask themselves about what fields of study to choose? What subjects to focusing in? Should they go to college or vocational school, or just go to work? Which university will be best for their career? All of these choices have big implications for their future and should be taught early to help them make the right decision.<\/p>\n
In some countries, career decisions are often made by students\u2019 parents but many parents do not have enough information to guide their children. Some parents based their advices on their experiences or on the past rather than the future. Many do not consider their children\u2019s interests or capability but on their own wishful thinking. Few years ago, a student\u2019s father told me: \u201cWhy bother with career planning, just study Medical, Dental, and Pharmacy then everything will be fine.\u201d I asked him: \u201cThese are all good choices but these fields are very selective. What happen if students did not get into these schools? What else could they do?\u201d The father was silent then became angry: \u201cHow can you say that? My children are smart and they will get in.\u201d<\/p>\n
Students often told me: \u201cI do not have a choice; my parents want me to study this field or that field.\u201d Of course all parents have good intention as they want the best for their children but career planning is NOT a wish or a dream. It must be practical based on the job market trends and depending on the interests, the capability of the students. It must also include an alternative plan when things do not work out. Career planning should begin with the students, they must evaluate their interests, their passions, their capability then try to match them with several fields of study to narrow down to few areas that they may want to study. This is the time students should learn about themselves, about their strengths and weaknesses and what it would be to be independent, to set the course of their future. They must evaluate their preferred fields of study with the job markets and industry trends to determine the practicality as well as the opportunity before narrow down to a field that they wish to study. Having all of these information, they should discuss with their parents, school counselors for additional guidance before making the final decision.<\/p>\n
Even with many information available on the Internet today, many students are still entering college uncertain about their fields of study. Many select something based on their parents\u2019 wishes rather than their own capability and that is why some do not do well in school. Having a clear direction about their career is important because some fields require a lot of preparations. If they do not have a strong foundation, they may fall behind and cannot catch up. Some fields such as science and engineering require courses that have to be taken in order. Missing or failing a few courses in the first year means that it will take longer to complete the degree.<\/p>\n
By knowing what career that they want to pursue, what field they want to study BEFORE entering college will help them to choose the right school. There are many universities, each with their own program and faculty expertise and some are better than others. Selecting the right field of study, the right university is the best way to guarantee career success. Most teachers do well in transfer their knowledge to students but they often do not pay attention about students\u2019 career or what is happening in the job market. Many teachers only spent a little time helping students to think about what job opportunities are available, or how to decide which career to develop. Despite the amount of time that students spend in school, little time is devoted to thinking about how their knowledge might be applied after they graduated. Without adequate careers guidance many schools are still providing an \u201cacademic curriculum\u201d that lacks relevance for the job market and for the students themselves. Without professional career guidance, students may struggle with their career after graduated.<\/p>\n
