To meet the need of this century, your university may want to focus more in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) to develop skilled workers who can help create an economy of innovation, which then produces new jobs, new markets, and new industries. In this fast changing world, university should get out of the traditional role to play an active role in guiding students about career planning and goals.<\/p>\n
The reason that STEM education is important because the world we need more scientists, engineers, and technology workers. The 21st century is the century of information technology and it drives everything. More than that, STEM education also teaches students about problem solving, critical thinking which are necessary to do well in this competitive world. In STEM education, students are taught about how to apply science and technology to solve problems, how to analyze issues and make the right decisions; some students can use these skills to create their own companies and improve the economy.<\/p>\n
Today the world is changing quickly due to the interaction and integration among the people, companies, and governments of different countries. It is driven by more international trade and investment which enable by information technology. With technologies the world is getting smaller and more connected and each country\u2019s economy is being impacted by factors beyond their control. It opens more opportunities for developing countries to develop economically and raise their standards of living, but at the same time, global market also bring in more competitions that often benefit larger global companies than local companies. In this changing world, students need to understand how globalization works, how technologies are changing their societies, and how they can take advantage of this trend.<\/p>\n
Regardless of what fields of study that students select, they all need certain knowledge about the world that they are living in. The best ways for universities to meet this need is to develop new training programs that are in alignment with the global industry needs not just local market because things are changing quickly and opportunities are available globally. Students must be taught more about globalization, world markets, competition among nations, emerging technologies, technology trends, business trends and career opportunities. Student must receive proper guidance to develop their own roadmap that guides them toward their career goals. Universities should have general courses that combine business and technical to allow all students to develop broader view of the world in the 21st century, how technology impacts business and how business is changing the economy. These classes should also offer students some basic concepts of innovation and entrepreneurship so they have a choice either to work in the industry or start their own company.<\/p>\n
Today most companies require that workers not just have technology skills but also know how to manage technology. Students must constantly learning about new technologies and emerging industries to understand what the future economy would be like. Perhaps the most effective way to create new educational programs with long-term impact is to offer specific training in innovation and entrepreneurship. The key is that such programs should be taught by both faculty members who understand the subject matter alongside experienced entrepreneurs. Universities should bring in experienced technology workers as guest speakers to help guide students with their practical views. Students often complain about the lack of guidance and difficulty finding good advisers or mentors.
