My thought on teaching<\/p>\n
When I began teaching 25 years ago, I often lectured for 45 to 55 minutes each class just as my professors had done when teaching me. However, I learned quickly to use short questions and answers in class to keep students from falling asleep. Eventually as I gained more experience, I changed my teaching; instead of lecturing from textbooks, each week I brought in few short articles from newspapers or technical magazine and began to discuss with the students to keep them engage with what was happening in the industry. I also asked students how each article could help them to apply to their future work and what they need to know to do well. This is particularly successful for my courses. I also learned to give quizzes on materials that I had not yet taught in order for the students to try and figured out for themselves some of the principles of the topic. About 15 years ago, I learned about the Active Learning method and I have been using them since then.<\/p>\n
Today, I always ask the students to read the course materials BEFORE coming to class as I put all materials on school website. When I am teaching on certain topics, I ask the students to find additional information and bring to class for discussion. I like to use short videos from YouTube or Khan Academy to help introduce the concept. I have found that the less I lecture and the more I have students doing activities, the more interested they are in learning. Finally, the way of giving long lecture is gone as my students prefer class discussion than listen to lecture. Sometime I would invite outside speakers on certain topics that I do not know well to share their expertise in my class and it is very helpful. Most students love to hear from someone who had succeeded in their field to share their experience. I also ask graduates who work in the industry to share their experience too, some return to school and actually talk to students about their career and some would write an email to me and allow me to share with current students. These are all precious things that students find more useful than just learning from a book. Students often tell me: \u201cLearning from someone\u2018s experience is always more practical than an academic theory.\u201d<\/p>\n
Of course, as professor I always ask myself whether I have been doing enough to help students learn. Are some topics should be explained by the professor than self-learned by the students? There are complex concepts that I know from previous experience that always causes students to struggle. Should I lecture or let them learn by themselves? Can my explanation help establish the foundation so that students can start learning or let them struggle a bit to improves their understanding? Is lecture the best way to clarify what students find confusing? Even today after many years of teaching, these things still bother me as I do not have the perfect answer. Should I lecture when students do not seem to care about the content, or do not think it is interesting? Would a lecture where I can add in the content with facts and intriguing questions can cultivate student interest?<\/p>\n
Many of my colleagues agree that we should not use lecture as the main instructional method. But we also need to decide when lecturing is better so that it is a well thought choice. Then there is the issue of how long should we lecture to keep students engage? I have found that a short lecture, about 10 to 15 minute to cover the materials, to summary some major concepts would be sufficient. Sometime a short video, a short quiz can makes the class easier and encourage students to learn better. I believe in the Active learning method, I believe that students would learn much more if they are motivated to learn by themselves because that is the only way that they will be able to retain and apply what they have learned in class. Active learning is the best way to encourage them to develop their lifelong learning attitude.<\/p>\n
