The new vision and direction<\/p>\n
When Satya Nadella becomes Microsoft Chief Executive Officer (CEO), he immediately redirects the giant software company with a new vision: \u201cMobile first, Cloud first,\u201d to describe what he thinks future information technology will be and where Microsoft should be moving. That vision now is the new direction for the company as everything must move toward mobile and cloud. A similar thing happened in 1995 when Bill Gates issued a new vision called \u201cThe Internet Tidal Wave,\u201d in which he called the Internet \u201cThe most important development since the Personal Computer\u201d and changed the vision of the company from \u201cPutting a PC in every home.\u201d to \u201cPutting a PC in every business then connect them to the Internet with Microsoft\u2019s Explorer.\u201d<\/p>\n
After the new vision is announced, industry analysts predict that there will be some changes in this giant software company but nobody believe that it happens so fast. Within two months in office, Satya orders a massive layoff of 25,000 employees, many are high ranking managers. This is necessary because Microsoft needs to move fast else it will not be able to compete with Google, Facebook, Apple and hundreds of rival companies. Under new vision, Microsoft wants to move quickly beyond what they already succeed by developing new tools that can analyze, predict, and give insight to managers to make decisions. They want business to use their tools, their platforms (the Surface tablets), operating systems (Windows) and back-end cloud infrastructure (Azure) to organize all data to get valuable information quickly.<\/p>\n
Microsoft is not the only company that lay-off workers, many companies are shifting their strategies to focus on new skills, new tools, new directions and eliminating unproductive employees too. In the past 6 months, over 350,000 people were losing jobs as technology companies like Hewlett Packard, Cisco, and Dell etc. began to reducing their workforces. Remainders were required to go to special trainings to improve their technical deficiency. For example, IBM has issued 10% pay cuts to workers that have been selected for a new training program to bring their deficient skills up to current needs. The goal is to bridge the gap between what they know which may be obsolete and what is needed by the company. An executive said: \u201cThe business world is changing so company must change too but there are many workers who cannot change and become obstacle for the new direction. What they know is obsolete, what they do is no longer needed; they do not want to make any decision that may impact their position so they prevent others from making necessary change. We cannot tolerate this type of attitude and they must leave.\u201d<\/p>\n
As with technology changes, company\u2019s vision and direction must change and there will be changes in education and training as the job market has changed to accommodate industry changes. Today top universities are changing their curriculum to focus more on mobile application development, software as a service, cloud computing, big data analytics and computing security as skills that their graduates must have. A top university Provost said: \u201cWe must shift our trainings to deliver on the direction of the industry vision. When Microsoft, Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon commits to cloud computing and mobile apps development, the job market will shift in that direction and we must think about the future of our graduates.\u201d<\/p>\n
Industry analysts agreed, one wrote: \u201cYou cannot look back to the personal computing era, it is gone. You must look forward to the next trend and change quickly. The futures are mobile apps development, cloud computing, big data analytics, and computing security. No one knows which company will be the winner in this competition but all of them are recruiting graduates in these four strategic areas and this trend will permeate throughout the entire industry.
