A student wrote to me: \u201cI will graduate with a bachelor\u2019s degree in computer science next year but my school training is mostly in Java programming. I do not know what kind of job I could get with this skill? Please help.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: Although you only mention Java programming but as a college graduate, I assume your program also teaches you analytical skills, problem-solving skills, design skills, knowledge of information systems and network as well as basic security concepts. A good computer science training is much more than just teaching programming. As graduates with good Java programming skills, you can work as a Web developer where you create and support web-based Java applications, web services and web interfaces. I also assume that you know JavaScript to manage security settings that validate users and process business transactions.<\/p>\n
However having technical skills is NOT enough; you also need soft-skills because your job requires you to meet with users and customers. You need to gather business requirements, understand user\u2019s problems and discuss with them to improve their experience in using your product and services. Soft skills help you to do your jobs effectively and efficiently as you interact with your managers, and your co-workers. Every company expects college graduates to have certain soft-skills such as communication to convey information to others either orally or in writing. Having good ability to communicate is not just talking but also listening to others without judging them, share ideas with them, and provide assistant when they need help. You need teamwork skills as you do not work alone but always in teams so you must learn how to cooperate and share responsibility with team members. You must learn how to organize and prioritize your work according to a time schedule in order to complete the projects accordingly. You must learn to be flexible and react well to changes in the work environments and keep a positive attitude regardless what happen.<\/p>\n
