Effective teaching method<\/p>\n
A school administrator wrote to me: \u201cEvery year, we receive requests to implement new teaching method to improve student learning. It is difficult for us to verify whether the method is effective or not. We want to improve our teaching but we cannot simply implement new method and hope that it works. We need evidences and measurements to validate the new method. Do you have any suggestions? \u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: There are several new teaching methods and most do have good evidences that they are effective. However, some teaching methods are designed specifically for particular level of education. Teaching methods used in elementary school may not be effective in high schools or colleges. I have been used Active learning method in my teaching at university level so I can only mention about this method.<\/p>\n
In this method, students are responsible for their own learning where teachers provide guidance and help create learning condition where students could reach a higher and deeper level of learning. In this method, teachers organize course materials into smaller units, each with clear learning goals then check on students\u2019 progress at the end of each unit. The results are used to provide feedback immediately to students so they know whether they have achieved the learning goals or whether they still have difficulty and need additional support. I often divide concepts and skills that I want students to learn into units; each requiring about two weeks of learning time. Students read the assign materials BEFORE coming to class then participate in class discussions where they express their understanding based on questions that I asked. I follow their discussions and if needed, make correction or elaborate the concepts further to help them understand more. Following these two week activities, I administer a quiz to identify what students have learned well or where they still need additional work. The quiz covers the general concepts (What), practical application activities (How) explicit suggestions (Why) and exploration questions (What if) to encourage what students must do to master the learning outcomes (Deeper level goals).<\/p>\n
After the completion of each quiz, I conduct a unit review where certain issues can be discussed but instead of give them the correct answers, I ask students to come up with the answers themselves. For example, I said: \u201cIn the last learning unit, 25% of you have missed the concept of \u201cHeap Sort\u201d and its complexity. I like to ask somebody to come to the blackboard and explain it again to the class? After the volunteer student reviews the concept with the class, I want to make sure that everybody has learned it well by giving a few short tasks for students to do in class to verify that they all understood the concept. For example: \u201cConvert a maximum heap to a minimum heap?\u201d where student must explain how they do it step by step such as: \u201cHeap sort the elements by delete the first element from the top and inserts it at the bottom and does this \u201cn\u201d times . Since there are log (n+1) levels and one element is deleted every level so it is O (nlogn).\u201d The review also help enrich or extend their understanding by let students demonstrate their proficiency on the learning unit before continue to the next unit. By divide the materials into two-weeks unit with learning goals and verify the learning outcomes every two weeks, I can ensure that students have learned the materials well and developed the needed skills to apply the concept whenever they need.<\/p>\n
I think the traditional teaching method is \u201cineffective\u201d when teachers continue to teach course materials without knowing whether students have learned the concepts or not. By having only one major exam at the end of the school year or at the end of each semester do NOT truly measure students\u2019 learning ability or knowledge. Yearly exam puts a lot of \u201cunnecessary pressure\u201d on students and encourage them to \u201cCram\u201d for exam rather than to develop the skills that they can use in their career. A better way of measuring the effective of teaching method is to assess them frequently every few weeks to make sure that they have learned well before continue. A good way of measure teaching method effectiveness is NOT how many students pass the yearly exam but how many of them are still retaining what they have learned and be able to apply their skills in their career long after they graduated.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
