Why do you need teamwork?<\/p>\n
A teacher wrote to me: \u201cI have problems with teaching using teamwork. Most of my students do not like teamwork. In my class there are some students who work hard and some who do not work much but let others do work for them. Some students do not get along with others so teamwork means more arguments and less learning. Some team members do not even show up in team meeting or contribute anything to the team. This is a common problem with other teachers too and some even consider dropping it. I do not know what to do. Please help.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: There are teachers and students who believe teamwork is a waste of time as not much learning occurs in teams. To these students and teachers, lecture is a better way to learn. It is easy, more efficient, have been used for many years without any problem. They often ask why change into something that nobody like and may not work? My question is what kind of learning results from listening to lectures? What kind of skills students can develop just by memorizing some facts and formulas? Of course there are tests but what type of test can verify their skills and their ability to solve problem?<\/p>\n
Lecture materials are easy to memorize to pass tests but how many students still remember that after the tests? Teamwork forces students to learn materials in a deeper level and applies what they have learned to develop skills. Students may forget formulas but they do not forget skills. Of course, teamwork is difficult in the beginning because students do not know \u201chow to work in team\u201d yet so there are confusions, frustration, even angrily in this new way of learning. But if students never experience that frustration, they will never experience the ecstasy of discovering something or understanding something clearly. Teamwork allows students to go through the learning process of reading, confusing, gathering, discovering, analyzing, synthetizing and clearly understanding everything at deeper level.<\/p>\n
It is much easier if the teacher lectures, explains, provides examples, raises questions, evaluates answers, and then provides correct solutions. In other word, teacher does all the teaching. All students have to do is listen, take notes, copy the solution and memorize it for the test. This \u201cpassive\u201d learning may work in the past when exams are based on \u201cmemorization\u201d but it will not develop the needed skills for students to build a professional career in this competitive market.<\/p>\n
Working in teams is much difficult than learning on your own. Teamwork requires cooperation, organization, communication, delegation, discussion where team members learn about roles, responsibilities, and how to work together and depend on each other. There are more things students learn by working in team but in the beginning there are always \u201clazy students\u201d who do not do much but let others do everything for them. They make others feel frustrated since they have to work harder to carry the team but in the end, there are some who have the skills and some do not. By graduation time, there are some who have job and some do not. Students must understand that in the work places, everything is teamwork and if you do not learn teamwork skills now, when will you? If you do not learn to get along with team members now, when will you? If you do not learn to work together now, when will you? In company, you do not have a choice of who you want to be in your team as you must work with members who are not your best friends. If you do not want to work and let them do the work then you will get fired. If you do not have the skills, sooner or later you will be exposed and you will get fired. In company, you are assigned a role and responsibility and if you cannot do that, you will get fired.<\/p>\n
Teamwork can also help develop soft-skills that most students do not have. Soft skills are the interpersonal skills that describe a person’s relationships with others. In company, soft skills are considered more important than technical skills. Last year, the software industry conducted a study about new hires and found that 42% of them failed within the first 14 months. The surprising fact was when new hires failed, 89% of the time it was caused by soft-skills issues and only 11% of the time for a lack of technical skills. The fact was many new hires did not get along with team members, many did not show up to work on time, and did not complete their work accordingly but believe other members would do it for them etc. The research authors wrote: \u201cIt is easy to assess technical skills when hiring graduates as every company can conduct interviews to evaluate technical skills but they cannot assess soft-skills well. During job interviews, all candidates are polite and eager to work but when they got the job, company realizes that they lack the most important skills: Soft-skills, especially teamwork skills. The author concluded that technical skills can be trained quickly but soft-skills such as teamwork would take many years to develop and no company can afford to do that. That is why so many college graduates get fired after few months.\u201d<\/p>\n
Every year I have students who tell me that they do not like teamwork and request to be kept independently. I tell them that this is the way I teach and if they do not like it, they do not have to take my course. However, by the end of the course, most come and tell me that they appreciate my teaching as they learn more and understand the materials better, especially in their ability to solve problems. Basically they learn to work together and they begin to understand how teamwork can help them to grow professionally.
