Develop study habit<\/p>\n
Most students begin their first year in college with both optimistic and fear. Some think they can do well because they were successful in high school and had passed the exam to go to college. Some do not feel comfortable with the new environment and afraid that they may not be able to meet their parents\u2019 expectation. First year of college is always a challenge to students with so many things, so many activities, so many new friends, and so many reading materials. However most students have not been able to change their high school\u2019s study habit and have not learned how to study in college yet.<\/p>\n
Many first year students optimistically believe that college study is not different from high school. Many often wait few days before the test then start to cram as much as possible since they did it in high school and were successful. Many glances through few chapters in text book the night before and think that they know enough to pass the test. Only when they see many questions that they cannot answer then they get frustrated. They look at these questions then start to guess the answers and hope that they will pass the test. The surprising fact is some continue to have the same attitude throughout the entire course despite the evidence that they get poor grades in every exam. Basically, they must learn quickly that college is NOT high school and students must change their study habit, else they will fail.<\/p>\n
As professors, we all want students to succeed so we must take action to let them know what success requires. Of course, teachers will tell them what they must do to succeed such as for every hour in class, they must spend at least two hours of study then students will nod their head but do not change the behavior. The best way is to make things more realistic by starting with an early test at the second week in the course. This is where we let some students who do not do well in test to get a clear message that college study is much harder than what they think. However teachers need to do it carefully because if students think the course is too difficult, some will change to other course and not learn much.<\/p>\n
To help students change their study habit, I often start with an opportunity to let them redo what they did not do well. I tell them since they missed many questions in the first test, they have one day to study and retake the same exam again but this is an exception since it only happens once for the first test. It makes some students to go back and study then they learn the first lesson that study in college is NOT the same as in high school. To prepare for all future tests in the course, I make all students to set their study goal by create a list of what they needed to do, when they need to do it in order to accomplish that goal. Before each test, I ask students to give themselves a grade for the test – for example \u201c10\u201d before taking the test. After the test, I correct it and have students identify how many questions that they missed and determine why they gave themselves a \u201c10\u201d but the actual grade is only \u201c7\u201d. This will work as a reminder of the goal and study activities that they set for themselves so they learn what mistake that they made and why they did not achieve their study goal. Each student will explain to the class about their mismatch and the reason then after several trials, many have changed their study habit and the actual learning happens.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
