The new world<\/p>\n

A college student wrote to me: \u201cHow do I get a good job and keep a job for life in this bad economy? What should I do to make sure that I will do well after graduate?<\/p>\n

Answer: Today we no longer live in a world where people can work one job, for one company, for their entire life. The rule has changed as each person will have to work multiple jobs, in several companies and changing job every few years. To keep yourself employable, you must examine what you could provide to companies based on their needs and take action if necessary. You must review your strengths (your skills and experiences that can move you from one job to another) and your weaknesses (the lack of skills and experiences that can hold you back or make you no longer needed). You must constantly look outside your present company and monitor the industry\u2019s trend to identify new opportunities (where are the best place to work as well as get better wages) and ready to move.<\/p>\n

Nobody like to change and it is hard for most people to fully understand and act accordingly. But the fact is the whole world is changing with globalization and technology. Competition for job will be more difficult and if you are not prepared, somebody will want your job. You must understand the new rule: Every job is temporary and we live in a competitive global economy. You may have a good job today; you may not have a job tomorrow. Your long term career success will depend on your attitude (your ability to accept reality as it is, not as you want it to be) and your aptitude (your ability to continuous learning new thing and new skills for the changing employment scene).<\/p>\n

Not long ago, most students were told that getting a job with a stable company or with government was the best thing to do. Company and government would take care of you. Today, the rule has changed as in the global economy; you must take care of yourself. There is no stable company and there is no guarantee for any job. Fifty years ago, Forbes magazine list 500 top companies in the world. These were the best, the most profitable, and the most stable companies in the world. Today the list of top 500 companies only consists of 185 companies from previous listing, that means 315 companies are no longer on the top as many have been eliminated. If you think working for government is stable, you can look at Greece, Spain, Portugal, and soon Italy and France and ask why so many government workers are protesting in the street for their works are being eliminated.<\/p>\n

In order to keep your job, you must be your own career manager. It is you who are responsible for your life and your future; and only you can set goal for your career. That is the only way you will survive and do well in this new world.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
