According to a 2013 industry report, the future for college graduates in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) is very bright because they will have twice or three times more job opportunities as non-STEM graduates and they will make about a third more money too. Of course a college degree in STEM fields does not mean you will automatically get good job unless you have the knowledge and skills. So what can students who are going to college do to improve their chances of getting a good job when graduate?<\/p>\n
As new college student, you need to select a fields of study in STEM areas that suit your ability and interests. If you like technology then makes sure that you select the right school that teaching the right technical skills. Not all technical training programs in university are the same so you should select schools that teach the most current skills. Today high demand skills include programming in Java, Python, C++, PHP, JavaScript, and Ruby. You also need knowledge of databases on both SQL (such as MySQL, Oracle and DB2) and NoSQL (such as Mongo DB, Cassandra and Couchbase). If you have skills in mobile app development, computing security, data management, big data analytics and design graphical user interface then you can get higher salary as these skills have the highest demand in the industry.<\/p>\n
However, having technical skills are not enough, you also need to have soft-skills. Skills such as communication, teamwork, time management, organization, ethics, leadership, problem solving, and negotiation skills are essential in the industry. If you only have programming skills like Java, Python you still may not be able to get a good job if you do not have certain soft-skills. Actually soft skills are the key factor that makes you more employable in this competitive job market. Companies know that most college graduates have similar technical skills but they are selecting candidates based on their soft-skills rather than just technical skills. Students often begin to look for internship during the third year in college but it would be better if you start in the second year because you will have at least two internships before graduation where you gain more experiences. Among these \u201cimported\u201d workers, 86% were Indian as they all speak English well but the number of Chinese and Eastern European is also increasing as their language skill is getting better. If your local job market is slow, you may consider working for foreign companies or even work in another country.<\/p>\n
