However company leaders who want to remain effective in their leadership must continue to learn by listening more to their people.<\/p>\n<p>The fact is many company leaders who have been successful DO NOT really know many things than they would dare to admit. The lack of new knowledge is the major problem in many companies as their leaders are too busy with their daily works and do not pay attention to new things. It is this \u201cblind side\u201d that hurt them and their companies. Business theory called this \u201cPrisoner of fixed attitudes and habits\u201d symptom and considers it the number one cause of company failure when leaders cannot see clearly to lead the company anymore.<\/p>\n<p>The job of company leaders is to set vision and strategic goals. Sometime when managers become leaders, they often act as a managers rather than visionary leaders, making difficult for the company to make progress in this fast changing time. And that is why many companies failed. Being a visionary leader means continue to learn new things to set specific goals and achieve them. Of course, some decisions may be unpopular but necessary to lead the company to achieve its business goals. By clearly explain the vision, company leaders help workers understand how the decision was made. Even workers may not agree with it, but they feel that they are informed about the direction. By saying \u201cI already know\u201d leaders shut down the suggestions and prevent others from sharing their concerns about the company and that is a mistake.<\/p>\n<p>Forty years ago, when an employee of Digital Equipment, the second largest computer equipment company in the world, suggested that the company made plan to build personal computer similar to Apple, company leader said: \u201cI already know, nobody wants a home computer.\u201d Five years after that, Apple computer was selling fast and Digital Equipment filed for bankruptcy. Over ten years ago, an engineer at Nokia suggested that the company integrated phone and computer into one unit and even built a prototype to prove it. Company leader said: \u201cI already know, a phone is a phone and a computer is a computer and the two do not mix.\u201d When Steve Jobs heard that he immediately created the iPhone and disrupted the entire phone industry. Today iPhone is the best seller smartphone and Nokia is no longer in mobile phone business.<\/p>\n<p>How can a company leader avoid this symptom? The best way is to keep an open mind and willing to listen to what people suggest so they can keep learning and changing to avoid their \u201cfixed attitudes and old habits\u201d. Every leader has certain motivation, but overtime the ambition subsides unless they motivate themselves by continue to learn new things. The most successful leaders are people who know more than others about emerging technology so they will lead instead of follow. That is why they always capture the market before anyone else does. Steve Jobs often said: \u201cI listen to what is happening around me and connect these dots and that is why we always create exciting new products before anybody else.\u201d Bill Gates also said: \u201cIf you want to stay active, you have to keep learning and trying new things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When I first became a professor at CMU, I asked the advice of my professor Dr. Herb Simon and he said: \u201cYou learn the most from people who are the least like you. Listen to them and learn from them.\u201d How many people could give you precious advices like that? Do we like to spend time with people who are exactly like us, professors from the same field of study, friends who share the same interests, and people who work in the same profession? We will feel comfortable with them and overtime we will become \u201cPrisoner of our own fixed attitudes and habits\u201d symptom described in business theory.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to learn to listen from people who may not share the same opinion with you, especially after you achieved a position of leadership. You need to keep your mind open for new ideas and new suggestions.
