Vi\u1ec7c l\u00e0m c\u1ee7a h\u1ecd l\u00e0 \u0111\u1ec3 ch\u1eafc r\u1eb1ng h\u1ec7 th\u00f4ng tin nh\u01b0 m\u1ea1ng, c\u01a1 s\u1edf d\u1eef li\u1ec7u, e-mail, Internet\/intranet ch\u1ea1y tr\u00f4i ch\u1ea3y v\u00e0 an ninh. This month, many high school graduates are entering universities. Many hope that having a degree will get them a good job but how many of them know that a college degree does NOT guarantee anything unless graduates have the knowledge and the skills that the job market needs. Students and their family must understand that a college education is a major investment and they must investigate carefully to select the right school, and the right fields of study, to ensure that their investment in the future is good.<\/p>\n
The fact is there were many unemployed graduates who cannot find jobs because they did not spend time to investigate the right school, the right fields of study, then regretted that they wasted four years of their life and damage their future. The fact is there were many college graduates who had to take jobs that did not require a college education because they did not understand the supply and demand of the job market. They selected fields of study that either have no demand in the market or the job market already had an over-supply of graduates in that field. The fact is there were many students who quit college because they were unprepared and wasted time in unnecessary activities instead of study. All of them became a burden for their family, for their society, and for themselves as their future is bleak.<\/p>\n
In the past several years, I have taught classes in both Europe and Asia, and I saw this situation happened everywhere. There were many unemployed college graduates with no hope of the future and many were desperate. I have talked to many graduates, listened to their concerns and found that most did not know how to get out of this situation. I have written many articles suggested that these graduates consider an alternative solution such as returning to school to get trained in areas that have high demand or take vocational courses to be certified technician in a specific field that has high demand. I have met parents who keep asking the same question: \u201cWhich field of study that will give my children the best chance to getting good jobs when they graduate?\u201d My answer is: \u201cTell them to study Science, Technology, Engineering and Math\u201d (STEM) because there is a high demand of workers in these fields but not enough graduates.\u201d<\/p>\n
Among all the fields in STEM, the best is technology field because today information technology is everywhere and impacting everything. There are millions of unfilled IT jobs available in the market. With more companies depend on information systems, IT jobs from entry level positions such as software testers, and software developers to more advanced position such as IT managers, system analysts, system architects, data scientists are in high demand. Even at the top, such as Chief Technical Officers (CTO) or Chief Information Officers (CIO) are also in high demand. Few weeks ago, a software company executive went on TV and declared: \u201cIn this Information Age, if you do not study information technology than you are making a mistake. There is nothing better, easier, and make more money than an IT career. There is a critical shortage of IT skilled workers all over the world and if you do not seize this opportunity than you will miss a chance to build a best career for yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n
The entry level in Information Technology (IT) are software tester and software developer where most college graduates will work for few years before moving up to the next level of technical leaders or system analysts, who focus more on the requirements and design of specific information system for an organization. Some may design new information systems or figure out what hardware and software upgrades will make the existing systems run better. There are several analyst job titles depend on specific works such as systems analyst, network analyst, and database analyst. Most analyst jobs require strong soft-skills to communicate with customers to get requirements as well as experiences to implement the information systems. After few years, many analysts move up to project manager where they manage IT projects.<\/p>\n
Another important job in IT organization is System Manager where people must have both business and technical knowledge to implement the right technological solution for each specific business need. Today most IT managers came from the Information System Management (ISM) program where they manage IT functions for the company. Their job is to make sure that the information systems such as networks, databases, e-mail, Internet\/intranet are running smoothly and securely. Network and systems managers monitor and adjust the system to limit downtime and allocate bandwidth. IT system managers also often responsible for the security of information systems. In larger organizations, there is another role called Computer security specialists who specialize in manage the security of the IT system.<\/p>\n
According to the industry report, IT jobs are the fastest-growing career with million unfilled positions all over the world. There are hundreds of specific positions and specialists available depending on the needs of specific companies. However beside technical skills, these jobs require strong soft-skills as they must always work in team and sometime with people who may not understand technical well. Another aspect of these jobs is it requires workers to adapt a lifelong learning attitude as technology changes so fast that knowledge about specifics can quickly become obsolete. That is why college students in this field must adapt a new learning attitude to continuous learning. Of course to be an effective learner, workers need to have a strong basic knowledge of software engineering, along the domain where the technology is applied.<\/p>\n
Because software engineering is a relatively new field, some schools are not educating students very well as they are still using the traditional method of memorization rather than the practical aspect. Students must investigate the training program as well as the teaching method to select the right school and the right field of study to ensure that by the time they graduate, they will be able to build a strong career based on their lifelong learning attitude.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
