Answer: Traditional education believes education is the \u201ctransfer\u201d of knowledge from teachers to students. In this system, lecturing is the main method of transferring and memorization is the evidence that students have received the knowledge. Today education is more than just the transferring of knowledge but also the \u201capplying\u201d of knowledge therefore, it requires a different method of teaching.<\/p>\n
Traditional method emphasizes the memorization of facts and formulas, but most students forget what they learn after complete school. Active learning method focuses on training students to \u201capply\u201d the knowledge so they can develop skills that last a long time. In this teaching method, teachers lecture but also encourage students to cultivate their curiosity, their creativity, and their independent to improve their self-learning capability so that they can do well in their career. In this competitive world, students must be taught to be independent, to be confident, to better prepared and be able to adjust to changes in the job market. Therefore students\u2019 personal development is more important than just acquiring a lot of knowledge.<\/p>\n
Traditional education assumes that degree is equal to knowledge but rarely mention skills resulting in graduates that have degree but do not have skills. Although they can recite books and formulas but cannot apply them to their job. If you look at the jobs in developed countries and developing countries, you will notice a difference: Most job openings in developed countries focus on skills and clearly describe what the company needs as well as expectations but job openings in developing countries always emphasize a degree. The fact is there are people with high degrees who occupy important positions but cannot do anything. I have seen electrical engineer graduates who can recite theories and formulas but cannot even fix simple electric wires at home and have to call electric technicians to do it. I have met people with doctorate degree (PhD) who can explain many theories but have no idea about the job market\u2019s supply and demand. These people are victims of an archaic education system that emphasizes memorization without practical aspect.<\/p>\n
Today knowledge is changing fast, memorization do not work anymore because what we learn today may not be what the world needstomorrow. The fact is many of\u00a0tomorrow\u2019s\u00a0jobs are even unknown to us today. Therefore, students must be taught on \u201cHow to learn\u201d NOT \u201cWhat to learn\u201d as they must develop an attitude that learning never stops. Current elementary and high school are places where students learn all the basics to build a strong foundation but in college, they should be taught something practical that can help them develop their career.<\/p>\n
Traditional education focuses on exams to select a few people. That put a lot of \u201cunnecessary pressures\u201d on students and prevents them from develop their love for learning, basically they are afraid of learning. That is why many students stop learning after they graduated. That is wrong because learning must continue for life. You cannot encourage a lifelong learning attitude by focus on exams and tests. If you look at current classroom today, traditional teaching method does not teach top students anything that they do not already know, but it is difficult for many weaker students as they need help. By eliminate these students via exams; we are losing many potential workers to build a knowledge workforce for the society. Traditional education is rooted in the \u201cdynasty era\u201d to select a few highly educated people to work for the emperors, it may work in the past but not today because we need a large knowledgeable workforce to develop the economy. An education system that put young people in classes, make them memorize formulas and theories then eliminate them via exams is obsolete. Instead of making they enjoy learning, encouraging them to learn more by instilling curiosity, creativity, developing new knowledge, the system discouraging them with exams and making them afraid of learning.<\/p>\n
The \u201cActive learning\u201d method requires teachers to interact with students via discussion to know what is on their mind; to see how they learn the course material; and knows whether they really understand the concept. Teachers must ask questions, encourage participation, and challenge students to find their own way to understand the knowledge in a deeper learning level. Today the world is impacted by science and technology and these fields require a lot of technical skill which means they involve a lot of intensive student-teacher interaction. Skills development requires students to have deep understanding and well-organized knowledge, not just memorizations. Students must be able to perform, not just recall. Skills development requires a lot of practices not just reading few articles or memorizes some formulas.
