Mobile programming<\/p>\n

A Computer Science student wrote to me: \u201cAccording to your blog, mobile programming is the future but my school does not teach mobile programming. Where can I learn this skill? I need to have a job when I graduate. Please help.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: Today most software developments are focusing on applications that run on mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. There are many jobs for software developer with mobile app skills and all over the world, the demand is higher than the supply. I have written several articles about mobile apps in this blog, please review them. Basically there are two popular mobile platforms:\u00a0 Apple\u2019s iOS (iPhone and iPad) Google\u2019s Android (Most smartphones) so it is up to you to select which one to learn.<\/p>\n

To develop an app for iPhone or iPad, you need to use the Objective-C coding language and the Cocoa framework. You also need to use an IDE (integrated development environment) called Xcode and it only runs on the Mac, so you will need to buy a Mac to develop iOS app. To develop an app for other smartphones, or Android apps, you can use Java language and learn the Android Software Development Kit, which runs on your PC. You also need to use an IDE such as Eclipse. There are other mobile platforms such as Windows 8 or Blackberries but they are not popular.<\/p>\n

The best way to learn about how to build iPhone and iPad apps is go to Apple\u2019s iOS Dev Center where the company provide online resource from starter guides, tutorials, videos and documentation. You do not have to pay anything to learn as Apple wants you to write apps for them (Of course you must have a Mac) and follow this link:https:\/\/developer.apple.com\/devcenter\/ios\/index.action<\/a><\/p>\n

For Android apps development, you also can go to the Android Developers Training. There is a series of articles that helps you to make your first app, starting with the basics to the advances:http:\/\/developer.android.com\/training\/index.html<\/a><\/p>\n

There are also several online trainings on You Tube by individuals that you can learn from them. There are books on mobile programming available in many languages that you can buy. However the best way to learn mobile programming is to do it. You will make mistakes and learn more from them.
