A company owner wrote to me: \u201cYou wrote on your blog that \u201cTechnology has changed everything.\u201d As it continues to change how do I ensure that my company can adapt fast enough by investing in the right technology? Please advise.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: In this global competitive environment, the ability to adapt to market change is critical. You cannot afford to stay behind competitors but must quickly gain advantages and grow. Although consultants would often tell you that to adapt to market change you need information technologies and urge you to buy more equipments but my advice is you need to have skilled workers first. Without them technologies mean nothing because it is the people who create, manage, and operate technologies and your success in business depends more on having highly skilled workers than just technology.<\/p>\n
Information Technology (Hardware, software) is expensive and if you are not careful, you may waste a lot of money. As company owner, you must select only the technology that can support your business. To do that you need to hire knowledgeable people to help you to develop a vision on how technology can help your business goals. You may need to hire more college graduates who have knowledge of current technology to help you growing your business forward ahead of your competitors. You can find some of them among graduates in Information System Management as they are trained to do that kind of work. Technology is only as good as the people who manage it so you may need to look at certain universities that provide this type of training. A good IT manager knows how to develop IT strategy to support business goals; they can plan, implement, monitor, and asses IT investment results to make sure that they are in alignment with the company\u2019s direction. IT managers will recruit, select, train new workers on IT issues and maintain a secure work environment.<\/p>\n
There is a difference between IT manager and a business manager who graduate from business schools. IT managers are trained in technology and business to improve company\u2019s effectiveness and efficiency by define, implement technologies in a company. They will manage IT projects, networks, as well as all software development within your company. They are responsible for IT strategies to deal with cloud computing, mobility, software as a services and issue policies, and procedures to implement them.<\/p>\n
Adapting to market changes start with your leadership and direction but it is important that every managers in your company understand and support it. This is not easy as many managers are often afraid of changes that may impact their positions. They would rather stay the same than change. That is why you need to restructure your company into a \u201cFlatter organization\u201d by reducing management levels to encourage collaboration and allows some levels to be responsible for their actions. You must break down the bureaucracy and hierarchy across your company that prevents the sharing of information and decision making that slowdown your company\u2019s productivity and growth. Only by doing that then you can effectively implement changes across your company for adapting to market changes. Technologies can help you to do it quicker and better. Email can get information to everybody instead of paper memos; business intelligence software can collect data and organize them into reports to appropriate management levels; Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software can help you to automate and manage many functional units better and faster; and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software can improve your interaction with your customers etc. All of these technologies are now available for you to use but first you need technology skilled managers to manage them. That is why my advice is to hire knowledgeable workers first before implement any technology.<\/p>\n
