In the past few years, many college graduates could not find job due to the global recession, even the lucky ones who had jobs also found that their salaries had not changed. Some chose them because they liked them but many did not know about the job prospect as they still believe that having a degree will get them job. In this economic recession, people who have job try to keep it as long as possible so there is no opening for newly graduates.\u201d For years, students have often been told that they must get a college degree since there are no jobs without a degree but no one tell them which field of study to pursue, which degree to have and what kind of knowledge and skills they must have. While unemployment among college graduates varies among countries but even when the economy is fully recovered, there is still a high level of unemployed college graduates and large number \u201cunder-employed\u201d graduates who work in jobs that do not require a college degree.<\/p>\n
The fact is WHAT YOU STUDY will affect whether you will GET JOB or not and HOW MUCH you will make. For example, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) graduates get the best job with highest salary but others may not. The U.S. Department of Education 2013 reported that the average salary of business administration graduates with a Bachelor\u2019s degree is $55,000 when math graduates get $68,000 and computer science graduates get $84,000. The question is: \u201cWhy don\u2019t more students pursue degrees in areas that have the best jobs and best salary?\u201d The report found that not all students are aware of this fact and not all fields are feasible for every student. The report concluded that things do not look good for college graduates in NON-STEM areas such as Literatures, sociology, history, arts, drama, and photography etc. Even business administration field once was hot but now is not as there is a surplus of workers in business and finance fields already. An analyst wrote: \u201cThe job market is based on supply and demand rule. According to a global industry report, from an economic standpoint, any country would benefit significantly by having better STEM education because the fields are expanding faster than any other as almost everything in the 21st century will be driven by science and technology. The global industry report predicts that within the next ten years 1 in 8 new global jobs will be STEM-related or an estimated 14.8 million jobs in total. Over 90% of those job opportunities will require college degrees. The key challenge with STEM education is most students are not fully aware of the value of STEM. Even they know, few would choose them because STEM courses are more rigorous than other fields such as social sciences, history, literature and arts. A teacher explains: \u201cStudents often avoid difficult subjects and many do not even think about career until they finish school and that is often too late.\u201d To promote interest in STEM, students need early exposure to STEM subjects in high school to build a good foundation to ensure future success. Students also need qualified, enthusiastic teachers to teach them the essential basics of STEM fields such as science, math, statistics and some programming courses.<\/p>\n
There are other obstacles such as lack of educational resources, and inadequate teacher qualifications for countries looking to include more STEM courses in their curriculum. An educator explains: \u201cBecause STEM courses require sophisticated technology and advanced teacher qualifications, many schools cannot find qualified teachers to teach STEM. However there are solutions such as online courses where one teacher can teach for a large class with hundreds of students or promoting Massive Open Online courses (MOOCs) where students can learn from the best teachers from top universities via the Internet.
