Teachers\u2019 training<\/p>\n
When I taught in some countries, I was surprised that only few teachers go back to school to update their knowledge but a majority does not see the need for improving their profession. One professor told me: \u201cWe already have degree and have been teaching for many years, why do we need to go back to school?\u201d<\/p>\n
If we look at professions like medicine, pilot, and engineering, annual trainings are required to ensure consistency of quality and up to date skills. These professions are holding individual accountable for their works and requiring them to show the most up to date skills before they can continue to work. For example, Medical doctors perform surgery, treat diseases; pilots fly airplane, and engineers build buildings and bridges and they all do that according to certain standards and must renew their work-certification annually in order to do work. I think teachers should have similar rule for deliver quality trainings. Without skills update how can we be sure that the future generation is receiving the up to date knowledge to develop skills that enable them to be productive to society?<\/p>\n
Currently teaching profession in many countries depends mostly on individual efforts. There is no standard knowledge required once a teacher starts teaching. There is no guidance for continuous professional improvement so there is a huge variation in teaching skills among teachers. Without a system to support the profession, teachers are left on their own to improve their own skills with unpredictably results. If we look at countries that have the best education such as Finland, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea we can see that their teachers\u2019 trainings are very selective with rigorous guidelines and high standards. A friend in Finland told me: \u201cIt is easier to get into Medical school than Education school; only one among hundred applicants get selected to be teacher since Finland takes teaching profession very seriously and the salary is as high as a Medical doctor.\u201d\u00a0 When I was in Finland, I also found that teachers here spent a lot of time on improving their teaching skills, some videotape their classroom teaching to watch them later to find way of improve their teaching technique. I am not surprised that Finland is currently rated as the best education system in the world.<\/p>\n
Unfortunately in other countries that I visited, the teaching profession is not treated as high as I would expect. A college degree is usually required to teach but there is no measurement of teaching skill. There are no annual training requirements and a teacher can teach the same subject for many years using the same materials without any change. That is why many graduates are having obsolete knowledge and completely disconnected from the realities of the fast changing world. Because teacher salary in those countries is often low, many have to do extra works to make a living, they do not have time to improve their skills or take additional courses to improve their knowledge. In this type of system, the longer they teach, the better their salary so a teacher with many years of experience have a tendency to stay in the same school teaching the same subject and younger teachers will have difficulty compete for the job.<\/p>\n
Of course, changing a traditional education system is difficult. They will require a lot of efforts and money to make teaching as a profession similar to medicine. But failure to change will be more harmful as with globalization, competition is fierce and without a strong skilled workforce, a country will find itself unable to compete. Last year, many economists predicted that Brazil, Russia, India, and China (BRIC) will be the strongest countries in the next twenty years due to their current economic growth, I disagreed. I think Finland, Singapore and South Korea would be stronger because they have the best education systems in the world. In this technology driven world, it is NOT population or natural resources that count but the \u201cknow-how\u201d and innovation management that will make a difference. For example, Africa countries have abundant natural resources but without proper education systems and skilled resources, many countries have become victims of wars and poverty. India and China have the largest population but without proper education systems, they have been struggled with social and economic problems for many years until recently when their education systems are beginning to change, their economies are getting better.<\/p>\n
Economic change is possible, but only if we focus on changing the education system first and consider teaching profession as the most important factor in making it happens. We must invest in teachers training and their salaries as a major investment in the future because they are holding the key to the future prosperity: they train the future workforce that builds our future.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
