The new business skills<\/p>\n
The business world has changed significantly over the past decade. Companies are becoming more global and businesses are facing fierce competition with new rules, new technologies, new products and services. Companies structures are being \u201cflatten\u201d and more collaborative and automation but training of business management in many universities have not changed much. Students are still taught economic theories and business rules of the industrial age when the world is already in the Information age. Students are still taught to use paper and pencil to calculate revenues, costs, and profits when accounting software can do them automatically. Students are still taught about writing reports to send upward for top level managers to make decision instead of be able to make their own decision and be accountable for their actions.<\/p>\n
Business industry report stated that there is a big gap between what business graduates can do and what they need to do in the industry. The reason for the mismatch is academic professors and business managers rarely talk to each other\u2019s. Managers are always busy to solve business problems and do not have time to meet with academic people. Academic professors prefer to follow the traditional curricula as they were taught many years ago and do not want to temper with what they think as the \u201cstandards knowledge\u201d. The result is business graduates are having difficulty and often fail when they go to work due to their limited knowledge and skills.<\/p>\n
In an interview with a newspaper, a global company executive explained: \u201cToday most business are using information technology (IT) but many business schools do not teach IT skills. My question is \u201cwhen will they do that?\u201d Business students are taught a lot of theories that are obsolete because business has changed due to globalization, automation and more competition. Our problem is the skills that we need are not the same skills that students are taught. Many theories that they learn in school are no longer valid because the market has changed. Today it is NOT local market but global market; Competition is NOT among local companies but global companies. My question is \u201cWhen will they teach about globalization and global competition?\u201d The roles of management have changed from giving direction to collaboration; from ordering to motivating but how many business students know that? My question is \u201cWhen will they teach about managing knowledge workers?\u201d Today manager must be able to communicate company\u2019s goals in a manner that motivate workers\u2019 commitment but how many business students are taught about communication and interpersonal skills? The old business rules emphasized stability and avoiding risks but we are living in the world full of changes and we must take some risks. How many business students are taught about new rule of not resisting changes but managing changes? The business world has changed from \u201cdecision making at the top\u201d to \u201cgroup decision-making\u201d at appropriate levels. We do not need many levels of managers sit behind their desk and send information upward until it reaches the top for decision making. Computer can do it much faster and more efficient but how many business students are taught about business intelligence software? Today manager must be a transformational leader, specializes in managing change with interpersonal skills to motivate others by sharing company strategic vision, while at the same time adhering to ethical rules. They must look at themselves introspectively when making decisions to make sure that every decision is ethical. But how many business students are taught about company vision, business goals and ethics? The commitment to vision, business goals, and the ability to motivate others to commit to the vision is the essential factors in today\u2019s business environment but how many business students are taught about planning according to a strategy, implement actions to overcome difficulties and align activities to achieve business goals?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAs I review training programs of business schools, I found that there are certain skills that business graduates must have but not taught so I ask business schools to develop courses to address these skills. Today a business manager must have the ability to plan works strategically to compete in a global market. They must have the ability to manage changes and diversity that are happening all over the world.
