The impact of technology<\/p>\n
According to 2013 government report, the number of American workers worked in agriculture has declined over 55% in the last fifty years. At the same time, the agricultural productivity has risen over 250% due to more automation and sophisticated farming equipments. A typical farm employed about 200 workers in 1950 now only needs about 75 workers but can produce more crops than ever. An analyst explained: \u201cSimilar to the manufacturing industry, the agriculture also applied technology to increase automation for higher productivity and profits. Even small farms are now using information technology to predict weather patterns, winds, soils condition, market needs, and pricing before they start growing crops.\u201d<\/p>\n
Information technology has reduced the number of labor workers in factories and farms but increase the number workers in technology companies. Technology can increase productivity, efficiency and profits with fewer people but it also creates severe impact for countries that are still depending on low cost labor such as China, Malaysia, and Bangladesh etc. The question many economists have raised is \u201cWhat are those countries doing with a large number of unemployed workers with no future jobs?\u201d An analyst concluded: \u201cIt is a time bomb waiting to explode and without appropriate action now, thing will get worst.\u201d<\/p>\n
Today large U.S manufacturing can produce more products with fewer workers because they use robots instead of people. Robotic technology has advanced and changes many things. Last week I met a scientist who works on the technology for self-driving car. He predicted that in the next ten years there will not be any jobs for taxi or truck driver. He said: \u201cTransportation companies will be the first to adopt self-driving cars. Taxi Company will have thousands of cars parked at locations around the city. Customers can contact a central call center and tell them where you want to go then pay by your credit card. A taxi being programmed to your requirements will pick you up at where you are then driving you to where you want to go.\u201d He was excited about the future: \u201cThe next step will be replacing all cars with self-driving cars. Without people driving, it will be safer as all self-driving cars will be programmed to follow certain speeds and avoid accidents. The same thing also happens to trucking industry too. In the next fifty to sixty years, people will not have to drive but sit in self-driving cars, read news on their smartphone, or send text to their friends. Imagine that everybody will buy new self-driving car and companies like Toyota, Honda, Ford, Mercedes etc. will make a lot of money. Of course, Google is also in the car business now and who know what will happen next? If Steve Jobs is alive, maybe Apple will have a self-driving car too.\u201d<\/p>\n
As I look at the near future, I can visualize a world full of robots doing many things that people are doing now. Many office works will have robots to answer phones, write documents and schedule tasks; certain simple decisions will be made by Business intelligent software; financial analysis and accounting will be automatically done by software; a teacher will teach class with several thousands of students in Massive Online Open courses (MOOC). Everything that can be automated will be and technology will change everything. Today these technologies are already being used in small scale but it will expanding fast because it is efficient and reduce costs for the company. Ten years ago, if I said one professor can teach thousand students at the same time then you may have laughed but my friend who teach MOOC at Stanford told me that his Artificial Intelligence class already have seventeen thousand students last week. Few years ago, if I said a car can drive itself, you may think that it is a product of science fiction novels but it is a reality now.<\/p>\n
My concern is not with the technology or what it can do but with people who will lose job due to advancement in technology. What will happen to them? Somebody may think that they will find another job in areas that do not use technology but my question is what area that will not be impacted by technology? Today office works, manufacturing works, agricultural works are all applying technology to reduce costs. We are in the middle of an information technology revolution that changes everything and this revolution is happening faster and more severe than the industrial revolution that happened a century ago. With new technology being created according to Moore\u2019s laws, new things are created every 18 months; many things will happen faster and affect the entire global economy. During the industrial revolution, workers who worked in agriculture could move to jobs in manufacturing with minimum training because most of the works were still based on labors. However today, without a proper education in particular areas such as STEM it would be impossible because technology works are intellectual work not labor works. With the advancement of technology, more people will lose jobs than finding jobs because all future works require different knowledge and skills and it does NOT need more labor workers.<\/p>\n
