Teaching relevancy<\/p>\n
As teachers, we probably hear comments from students such as: \u201cThis class is useless.\u201d Or \u201cI do not care about what I learned, just need to pass the class.\u201d\u00a0 Or \u201cI do not like this class but need to take it to graduate.\u201d Most students do not know that teachers cannot change the class contents as they are dictated by governments or school administration but as teachers, we can change how we teach it. If we can improve the class and teaching method, we can make a difference and be able to achieve our teaching goals.<\/p>\n
To improve students\u2019 learning, I always explain the relevancy of the course materials at the beginning of each class. Relevance is something that is meaningful and interesting to students such as by knowing materials and develops this skill; they can apply it immediately in the industry. By explain what problems they may encounter and what questions they may have when they go to work and how the class materials can help them, students will be more attentive and willing to learn more.<\/p>\n
The easiest way to get students to pay attention is to describe a problem, short story, or let them see a short video then tell them “Now, let us look into a concept or process that can help us to understand more about this situation.\u201d Today students are easily get distracted by many things so instead of spending a lot of time on lecturing, I prefer to have short lecture (15 minutes) then ask questions to engage them into discussion. If they have to sit quiet and listen, they tend to think of something else and forget the materials. Because what they hear in class can get forgotten quickly, I often select the most important theories, skills, or processes that I want them to remember and repeat them several times in the course. To make them think more about it, I often use a short video or picture to make them visualize the materials because what they see they will remember. Then I put the materials in a test so they have to apply what they learned to solve problem and this is how they will understand and develop the needed skills. (The concept is based on a simple phrase: I hear and I forget; I see and I remember; I do and I understand)<\/p>\n
Few years ago when I visited a Indian company, a manager was excited to see me: \u201cDo you remember me?\u201d Of course I did not so he explained: \u201cI took your Requirements Engineering class at CMU, I like that class and all the pictures you show us at the beginning of each class to get our attention.\u201d I have hundreds of pictures and cartoons so I vaguely remember anything. He was still excited: \u201cThere is a picture that shows a manager told his developers: \u201cGo ahead and code when I go to get customers\u2019 requirements\u201d and the whole class was laughing. That is a great class and I never forget it.\u201d That is the power of visualization.<\/p>\n
Of course, students must do more than just remember facts or concepts to pass the class. They must be able to apply them to develop meaningful skills with the materials that they learned. By focusing more on what they can do rather than what they must memorize, we can change their attitude of learning.
