Today the total cost of manufacturing in the U.S. is about 7% higher than China but the quality is much better. China\u2019s manufacturing-cost advantage has shrunk and now is about 7% cheaper but quality is getting worst, many things made there are having problems with customers. When everything is calculated for quality, productivity and shipping costs, today it is cheaper to manufacture products in the U.S. than in China. That is why many U.S. companies are moving their factories back and several European and even Asian companies are moving their factories to the U.S. too.\u201d<\/p>\n
A Wall Street analyst wrote: \u201cThe insourcing trend began few years ago but it accelerates this year and will have serious consequences for many low cost countries. The most severe impact will probably be China as several million workers will lose their jobs. For years, these workers are enjoying good jobs, good wages, and good time and now they are facing the reality of losing many things that they had. With several millions of workers lost their jobs last year and many million will losing jobs this year, China is facing a major problem and it is getting worst.\u201d<\/p>\n
Although China is the number one destination for manufacturing outsourcing but many things are changing as the U.S is quickly moving to be the top destination for manufacturing. The U.S. is also the top country in consuming so companies are eager to produce their products near customers to avoid shipping cost. As consumer trends are changing fast, companies are reacting quickly to changes in demand, which is a lot easier when they are making their products near customers. Manufacturing in the U.S. can reduce the time needed to get products out quickly to few days or few weeks instead of three to five months needed to ship things across the ocean. With many U.S factories are now completely automated and operated by robots, the costs of manufacturing can still be reduced and it is expected that in a year or so, it will be much less than China and other Asian countries. A manager explains: \u201cYou cannot compete with robots; they work 24hours a day and 7 days a week without asking for a raise. No real person can do that.\u201d<\/p>\n
Many people are surprised to know that the most aggressive company focusing on robotics is Google. In the past twelve months, Google had acquired over ten large and small robotics companies and has become one of the largest robotic companies in the world. People are asking why a software company is interested in robots? The answer is simple, successful company must grow and expand to diversify its portfolio. Robots like smartphones are a platform for products and services. Both require intelligence software to operate and Google is very good at software.
