Can you explain more about making these videos?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Answer: There is a big difference between watching a video and learning from it. Videos are excellent for presenting \u201cvisual information\u201d on certain subject but not effective in deeper learning. It should be used as supplement NOT a replacement of regular classroom lecture, especially in abstract concepts or critical thinking. Basically, pre-class videos must be designed to get students\u2019 attention and appeal to them so they will be intrigued to learn more.<\/p>\n<p>In blended courses, pre-class videos are used as an introduction to a subject or provide a general overview so students know what they will learn in class. Therefore it should be short to encourage students to watch video actively. I often use a technique that raise a question at the beginning of each video to give students an idea before they watch of what to expect, what to look for, and what might be worth thinking about. For example: In the project management course, I start my video with a question \u201cWhy software projects often fail when others such as hardware projects or construction projects do not? Then I show them a short video of big software projects that failed as well as successful construction projects.\u201d It challenges students to think about questions they may ask and ready to learn more in class. In the development lifecycle topic, I ask \u201cAmong the four phases of the waterfall lifecycle which one should be first? Why can\u2019t we code first? Why and why not? Sometime I would set an overview expectation: \u201cToday we will learn about five soft-skills that software companies need. As you learn about them can you prioritize them in order and explain which one is more important than others and why?<\/p>\n<p>Pre-class video should lead to in-depth discussion later in class. It should encourage students to establish a connection between the video content and their learning goals. It should promote questions, raise curiosity, and facilitate collaboration among students, which is a critical component of learning.
