Planning the future<\/p>\n
Traditional education system does not teach about career planning. Many things that students learn in school do not seem to connect to what they will do later in their lives. As students, they learn a lot about theories and formulas but rarely use them. They memorize all types of facts but most forget them after the tests and things they learned in school are forgotten after graduates. There is no mention of career paths which are an important component of how they will live and how they will work. The instructions given to students are \u201cGet good grades, graduate, get degree.\u201d but everything else is left for them to figure out after they leave school. Students receive a lot of guidance about mathematics, physics, chemistry, geography, literature, and biology, but most are left on their own when it comes to career options; or what skills that they need, and how things that they have learned in school can translate into a career in life. Even parents also advice: \u201cGo to school, get a degree then worry about other things later.\u201d That is why the degree becomes the ultimate goal of education.<\/p>\n
Today the whole world is changing and every country needs students that have strong career goals and direction about their futures. Students must be able to apply the knowledge they learn in school in their careers. They must be taught about the connection between theories and practices and what skills they must develop that will be used in their careers. They must understand that a degree is NOT a guarantee for a career but their knowledge and skills are. They must know which skills are needed and which are no longer needed. They must have a choice to select what they want to pursue that fits their passions but they must also be aware about industry trends and global needs. Currently these informations are NOT available to students and parents to help them make decision. Traditional education is still following the archaic colonial view that divide students into groups based on areas of study and these areas will determine what they will study in college. Therefore high school students who are categorized as \u201cliterature focus\u201d cannot study technology or science in college but must pursue something to do with literature. The fact is high school education provides all the basics that give students a good foundation but it should not prevent them from pursue something in college that can help them to develop a good career. Young people change their minds all the time, what they like in high school may not be what they like in college. College students must have a choice to select what they are passionate about and develop the needed skills and do something useful.<\/p>\n
Today the world needs a new generation of graduates not only takes jobs but also create jobs. We need graduates who can seize the opportunities, start companies, create more jobs and contribute to the economy. Therefore students must be taught about career planning as soon as possible so they can set direction for their college education and develop the needed skills that they can do for the rest of their lives. They must be taught NOT only to become workers but also become founders of their own companies using their talents and innovations. When I taught in Asia, many people asked: \u201cWhy can\u2019t we produce people like Bill Gates or Steve Jobs? We have a good education similar to the U.S. and our students are as smart as students in the U.S.\u201d I answered: \u201cHow many of your students are encouraged to start their own company? How many parents encourage their children to do something difference? There is no incentive to start their own company but students are often told to get a job or work for a company. Unless these views change, and students are encouraged to set their career direction early, you will never develop entrepreneurs like what has happened in the U.S.\u201d<\/p>\n
Today there are so many graduates who are unsure of themselves and have no idea about their future. Many are confused about career paths resulting from archaic educational systems that cannot change in this fast changing world. I have talked to many college students, most have no idea about career planning or what to do after school besides just \u201cgetting a job\u201d. Even when they want to pursue a career, many do not know where to start or how to start because they never had been taught about career planning. Some graduates told me that they will think about their future AFTER complete school but that is too late and that is why we have so many unemployed graduates.<\/p>\n
What we need now is to build the connection between college education and the market needs. We must change the thinking \u201cGet degree first then worry about everything later.\u201d In this case, we are encouraged students to pursue \u201cdegree\u201d instead of develop knowledge and skills. We must establish connection between what students learn in school and what they will need afterward. We must focus on non-academic skills such as teamwork, communication, leadership and global knowledge as the world is fully connected now and the job market is no longer limited in one city or one country but broaden to the whole world. By introduce students to career planning as early as possible we can evolve what students learn into skills that are needed to develop a lifelong career. We must provide students with all the information needed so they can understand their career options and set their direction when they start college NOT afterward.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
