Today’s students<\/p>\n

The most interesting thing about college students today is many do not have a real sense of the past. They know technology so well and it is hard for them to think beyond that. They are busy with so many things that occupied their minds and it is difficult to convince them that there are many things that exist today but not in the past. Since I teach Software Engineering and most of my current students are familiar with PC, iPhone, iPads, they do not understand why some people are still writing instead of typing. How do I explain to them that not long ago people had to write letters by hand, send them through the post office then wait for weeks for a reply. When I mentioned it, a student asked: \u201cWhy don\u2019t they send email? They can get a reply faster.\u201d Another student disagreed: \u201cIt is much better to text using the iPhone than using PC.\u201d Many of them cannot imagine the world without computers and that is how Information Technology (IT) has changed the world.<\/p>\n

When I was a college student few decades ago, the PC did not exist. We do not have direct access to a computer, to write program we must use punch card (It is very difficult to explain punch card to current students) and give to computer operator to run on the school mainframe computer. I never saw the computer or even touch it and everything I learned about computer is only in books. When I mentioned that, students were surprised: \u201cHow can you learn computer but never touch one? How can you write program without a keyboard and monitor?<\/p>\n

Today most students do not read printed books, especially long book anymore. Most are very familiar with anything they can find or read online. The idea of conduct research in the library by looking up information from books is foreign to many. A student told me: \u201cWhy do we have to read book? Just \u201cGoogle it\u201d and you get everything that you need.\u201d Another student looked at the book cases full of books in my office and comment: \u201cYou should use e-books instead.\u201d A professor friend lamented: \u201cPrinted book is dead, no one read them anymore.\u201d A librarian also told me that today few students go to the library to read books as most of the books are hardly touched by students. She told me: \u201cYou are few people who still check out books regularly.\u201d Of course, I have been reading books on a regular basis since I love to read and spend most of my time in the library. I asked her: \u201cSo today students prefer CD, e-book better than printed book? She said: \u201cAs long as they are reading than it would be fine but I am afraid that students are reading less and less then we will be in trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n

Today student love the speed of technology and they learn thing fast. If you cannot speed up your training and keep it current than your students may not interested in what you teach. At CMU, we are updating training materials every two years or so just to keep up with current trend. My friends in other universities told me that it is impossible to keep up as technology changes so fast. My concern is how do we teach them using their interest in technology? If we use the latest technology, will they pay attention to the content or just want to know about the technology? In that case, we have not taught them anything. How do we get their minds off of technology if you want them to learn something else? Few months ago, I raised few questions for class discussion, in a matter of few seconds many students already had correct answers. To my surprised, they said: \u201cWhy thinking? Why discussing? We just \u201cGoogle it\u201d and get the right answers.\u201d The issue today is science and technology information is so easy to get and most information are online. However learning is not about getting the fact but it is the thinking, the analyzing, and the understanding that we need to emphasized. Not long ago, students have to memorize many things but today they do not need to memorize anything as everything is on the internet and with smart phones, students can retrieve them in seconds. That is why Information technology has changed the world.<\/p>\n

I am teaching technology and mostly about the latest technology but I am afraid that if we do not pay attention to how we teach or train, we may develop a generation of students who know how to use technology but cannot thinking seriously. As an educator, I am worry that students who spent so much time on the computer, or other technology devices such as iPhone, iPads, they may read many things, knowing many facts but cannot think deeply or understand how things work and really learning nothing.
