Checking attendance<\/p>\n

A young teacher asked me: \u201cDo you take attendance in your class? How do I know whether students are learning or not if they do not attending class?\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: Most college professors do not take attendance in their class, especially if the class is large and it takes too much time. I do pay attention to class attendance but instead of calling out names, I use technique that gets students to pay attention, sets direction for the day, and encourages classroom discussions by asking simple \u201cattendance questions\u201d.<\/p>\n

In all of my classes, students are assigned some readings before coming to class. I often begin the class by calling out some names with simple attendance questions such as \u201cDave, tell me about the main concept of the XYZ reading assignment? Instead of answer \u201cI am here\u201d Dave must respond by tell me something from the reading assignment or ask questions on something that he does not understand. This puts the subject of the day into students\u2019 minds and encourages them to read while give me the chance to check on their responses. Of course, I cannot call everyone but I notice who are not attending class. Another effect is to reduce late arrivals as students know they will be asked to respond to my question immediately upon their late arrival. By asking simple questions from the assigned reading materials I also set a clear direction for the class on that day.<\/p>\n

Sometime I would ask them to respond to industry news to encourage them to broaden their knowledge and help them to relax. For examples, I would ask: \u201cWhat do you think about Google\u2019s new business in developing self-driving cars?\u201d Or \u201cWhy there is a shortage of skilled software engineers when there are many unemployed graduates?\u201d or \u201cWhy software engineering men have difficult time to find girlfriend?\u201d Questions like that will let students share many things that they read, encourage classroom discussion, keep the class more relax and sometime inducing laughter. They also promote more conversations between teachers and students rather for me to do all the talking. Sometime students may ask you to skip them when they do not have anything to say. Do not accept it as if you let someone NOT engage in this type of activities, others will use the same excuse. You should ask question then wait for as long as it takes for the student to respond to your question. Sometime, I would joke: \u201cDid your girlfriend have stolen your mind?\u201d or \u201cHave you read a comic book last night instead of the assigned readings?\u201d<\/p>\n

My view of teaching is we must use every minute of classroom time to engage students in learning. Checking attendance does not have to be a routine and wasting time but you can change it to a learning activity for your class. By having more questions to ask when calling their names, it sets the direction for more learning and help engage students to be active in class.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
